Jaymo
Wife was just closing the shutters for the night when she excitedly ran in exclaiming the 'piggies' are back. Ten of the little sod digging away in the garden- wanted to grab some subs n the triple or two43 but she wouldn't let me-- ended up watching them go to the neighbours for a forage in the old leaves. Hendrix's rifle
May sound daft but can you shoot pigs with a 243??
fortune
May sound daft but can you shoot pigs with a 243?? How do you mean? Practically, physically or legally?
figgy
He lives in France who cares. A 243 will stop a pig if bullet is placed right and in your garden shouldn't be hard to do.
fortune
I knew a bloke who shot quite a lot with a .22 hornet. But generally They won't give a condition under a .270 but as far as I know wild boar aren't a recognised species here so n theory they don't exist. Grey area. I know another bloke who Was turned down recently for Breneke slug for use on wild boar because he had never had a firearm of any kind other than a shotgun. HE was told that he would have to go out with someone and demonstrate 20>>30 stalks/kills to be able to demonstrate need and ability. Redgum
My local police recommend 30 cal but no legal calibre like deer. Have my 308 condition for boar and it definitely kill s them well enough.
Nuke
I use a 9,3x62 on boar. Don't thing the piglets really need that much power but if daddy shows up it's a different game... Here in Sweden 6,5x55 is the smallest caliber that is legal for class 1 game (moose, red deer, bears etc). /M

Jaymo
Sorry, yes- in France The piggies were at a distance of 20m from the house so the 243 even with subs placed correctly would do the job. The 'herd' consisted of 8 young which would be easy. Took a look at the damage this morn and boy have they been busy- holes everywhere including my nice newly laid grass. Problem here is the legality of shooting in your own garden of 'wildlife'- I can have semi auto rifles and pistols , yet I can't take pigeon or pests in my own garden..... But, this is France- guy I know is in charge of the local 'Hunt' and says "put some corn out and take one a night" - nobody would blink and eyelid. Stonepark
Some are using 45cal airguns to take them out, although they are running at 500ftlbs.

Don't mention AIRGUN or else some bright spark will sting one with with their 177 air pistol. . The bloke that was using a 22 hornet dropped one on a track and to all purposes was dead so he went back to the farm to get a tele handler to lift it back to the farm. when he returned piggy wasn't there, He had shot it between the eyes and the brain is very small and the skull is very thick there. he must have knocked piggy out and it must have come too and wandered off. not to be found again. I bet piggy had a fair old headache. After that the bloke used to go and cut their throat straight away.

buze
Actually a question here -- I'm the reverse of the OP; I'm french living in the UK! Aren't there any Boars around the UK? It's true that in france it's borderline getting out of hands, but I never hear of anything like a boar around here... Anyone know why? Jaymo
Buze You can have ours--- I'm right down in the south and there so many, yet some of the 'Domains' are charging hundreds to shoot them! As a kid on a Campsite near here we always saw them in the summer months and thought they were great- now I hate the dam things, going to cost a pretty penny to put up 500m of fencing to deter them..... fortune
I've taken out pigs with my air pistol at 100 yards.... That's nothing. My brother shot a mouse freehand with my Webley junior 177 at 35 paces. Total fluke.

One of the son in laws has a place down near Limoges. Do you know if they have wild boar in that area? He has said that the French are a pretty dangerous bunch when they get out hunting and it is a wonder that one half don't shoot the other half. Can't possibly comment on their abilities ( but alcohol and the local gendarme accidenty shooting himself is I'm sure just a myth. Oh, and the hunt master I said about turned up at mine last year and could barely stand- watching him drive away with a shrug is I guess the norm) Couldn't comment on Limoges as I'm near St Tropez, but a work colleague is between Toulouse and Bordeaux so not that far away and he says they have them too. Dougy
243 is capable of killing a boar. The difference between shooting boar in Europe is that most are driven so shot placement is more challenging. A larger calibre would compensate for a slightly miss placed shot.
