Milo
If any members have had a Purdey repaired or, more interestingly, renovated in the last few years I would be grateful for information regarding who did the work, quality delivered as well as time taken and costs incurred. Thanks, Milo.
Dick
I would be interested too as I have a gun that needs the woodwork refinishing and the chequering re cut. Not a Purdey but a lesser sidelock ejector.
HDAV
Not got a purdey but if I did, I would send it to uk gun repairs in Wellington Somerset.
figgy
As above Dennis and co are top notch gunsmiths who learned their trade in top London gunmakers.
HDAV
FYI well worth delivering in person, and collecting also, must go back soon.........
JohnfromUK
You don't say what needs doing; the stock, barrels, chequering etc on a Purdey are no different to any other decent British gun. In the event of mechanical problems, the Purdey action is very different to most others - notably the mainspring (which has an integral roller). If this is broken, you will need a Purdey specialist. rimfire4969
I have heard good things about UK Gun Repairs, if you need the barrels doing Barrelblacker on here has got a great reputation for quality work and he is sorting one of my barrels at the moment from a side by side with a dented rib, rebluing and a barrel lap for a good price. As for cost it would all be guess work without a gunsmith looking at it. It may just be easier for you to send it to me foc and I will have the problem I will even cover the rfd costs involved
wymberley
Dennis and Co did the barrels, stock and checkering (London fine) on my Churchill. Had it been a Purdey, I'd have still been delighted. Heartily recommend that you have a chat.

wymberley
Thanks, Wymberley. What work did they do for you on the barrels? Blacking. The gun was a 1934 XXV Boxlock and simply through fair wear and tear needed a bit of TLC although the checkering was well worn. To be honest, if you are priviliged to be invited into the workshop and watch the work in hand, then it's soon pretty obvious that if it shoots, they can do it. Barrelblacker
If it's barrel work please feel free to get in touch for a chat. We have been repairing and blacking & browning barrels for the gun trade for over 30 years. Below is a pair of Purdeys and a Holland & Holland Royal recently finished off. All three had a full rib strip & re-lay, polished and re-blacked. All the best. Gunman
What I would suggest is that you take the gun to a competent gunsmith experienced in working on English guns , F J WIseman for example and ask for an appraisal of the guns over all condition , their advice on what needs to be done and the approximate costs. If they suggest more work or greater cost than you wish to pay then suggest a budget for them to work within to do the essential and further cosmetic work .This I have used on many occasions when quoting for work , ask the customer what is the maximum he wishes to spend and then discuss what I would expert to achieve within that price ,
Milo
Thanks to all for advice offered. I am still interested to hear from anyone who can respond to the original post.
Gunman
Milo it is not possible to give a cost for work if you dont know what needs to be done .Although now retired I would not have posted costs on an open site without physically examining a gun first . If you would care to give your location I might be able to suggest a person you could contact to help .

welshwarrior
My recommendation for a good team to work on a Purdey is UK Gun Repairs, they are very experienced in English guns and have access to a Purdey trained stocker (at purdeys the stockers do a lot of lock work as well). Not a Purdey but a lesser sidelock ejector. Only one option for you my friend and on your doorstep. Elderkins of Spalding, I had a quality Spanish sidelock re-chequered last summer, superb job for around £
