Ttfjlc
Hello all, next weekend I'll be taking my eldest son and his mate clay shooting for his birthday treat. He uses my dad's 20 bore to good effect on game so I was wondering what would you recommend for a softish clay shell? Cheers
Me matt
I took a friends lad I to the clay ground a couple of weeks ago, he'd never shot before- and he's quite short 😐 Like you I wasn't sure on load weights, ended up buying some 21g Hull comp X known for their low recoil. I was impressed, iirc 1540fps. Edited January 15, 2017 by Me matt

Salopian
There are a vast range of suitable 20gauge shells available from all the British manufacturers Hull Subsonics and Gamebore do a lovely soft shell. Keep the load (grams )down to about 21 and they will be fine.
Westley
Express do a 21 gram 20 bore. I have used a lot of them, both when Instructing and for my 2 Grandkids aged 13 and 10. Sorry, forgot to say 7 1/2's shot. Edited January 15, 2017 by Westley
Me matt
Hi pal thanks for the reply but I don't believe you can get comp x for the 20 bore? Ah, that's a shame 😕 Have a word with whoever you buy your cartridges from- that's what I did, he offered several options of low recoil 21g's. Big Mat
I used the 24 gram Fiocchi loads and they seem quite nice, got them from Whaplode. Girlfriend uses Eley Amber 21gram and she says they're not too bad on the shoulder
Greenhunter
What load is he using to shoot game? Presumably something more than 21grms. Whilst I appreciate he will shoot a lot more shells at clays than game I would think he would be ok with a minimum of 24 grand. Don't disadvantage him so much so that he gets downhearted through not breaking the longer targets. GH
HW95J
From experience Gamebore Super Comp 21g are a gentle cartridge, they do them in 24g and 28 also. You could buy some of each (21/24) and see what works best in terms of compromise of recoil vs range etc.
BrowningDJC
Hull pro 20 in 21 or 24 grams are good, as are the eley CT 20.
Ttfjlc
Thankyou all for your opinions, I should add my son turned 12 today and is already a competent shot, he's used a variety of shells including 28g to good effect. My concern was more for his mate, he's just that bit smaller and not as 'well built' as my lad. I've been told he's been using a .410 OK but he's never shot anything bigger hence my question. Looking forward to Saturday as according to my son all his mate can talk about is going shooting. I should mention that if I bought my son some shells in a mainly pink box with a girl's name on the front he'd practically disown me! sitsinhedges
Just use subsonic trainer loads like the coaches do for ladies and youngsters. They'll break pretty much any target and be soft on the shoulder.
ChrisPCarter
Hull pro 20 in 21 or 24 grams are good, as are the eley CT 20. I use the 21 gram Pro Twenty when I fancy a change of gun on the clays. Very good cartridge and not a bad price.
grrclark
Hull, Gamebore and Lyalvale all have very soft shooting 21g loads for the 20 bore and all will do the job well. The Fiocchi Top 20 24g load i really like for clays although they are a little bit punchier than the ones mention above. They are also a bit cheaper then the other 3 too. Ttfjlc
Thanks again guys, just been browsing to see who stocks the gamebore or hulls as they seem to be a good bet.
