pigeon controller
I had a phone call from DB on Friday I can be ready for 12.15 so that was the start time to go out looking for all these freshly drilled fields with huge amounts of pigeons flighting in to be shot. Well that was the theory the reality was 100 miles and no birds in any number to set up for . Zero flightlines to follow and lots of birds in the trees on buds. I received a text asking for fifty fresh birds which I have always managed to supply but it can mean the Kiss of Death also. We ended Friday setting up on a bomb crater in the centre of a clover field with the birds feeding on clover and the hawthorn buds in the crater. It was 17.00 and we shot for an hour and picked up fifteen birds. Saturday we started out at 09.00 in the drizzle in a totally different direction and found some drilling of barley but it was only finished on Friday afternoon. No birds evident and decided to leave it . We found birds in groups of ten to fifteen on rape, clover and ivy but kept looking. We had seen some birds on clover on Friday and left our number for the farmer to ring and give us permission, No Call Back!!! So we looked at it today and it had approx eighty birds on the clover which was between two rape fields. So we obtained the clover farmers mobile number and left a message asking permission to set up on his clover. In the mean time we set up on the edge of the rape next to the clover and I was the beater going round the edge of the rape spooking birds that had landed in the trees etc. I even walked round the other rape field, my total for the day four pigeon and DB managed fourteen so the the total result for the weekend was two hundred miles for thirtythree pigeons and that is the first time I have not been able to fulfill an order. Royboy
It would be boring if you was guaranteed a big bag every week, at least you got out ! 33 is a decent bag to me !
Wilksy II
Still a great write up! All the time I'm thinking you would pull it round in the end, must be frustrating to not meet your order made worse by all that fuel! I found a lot of pigeons on barley drilling 6 miles from home but due to footpaths, horses, houses and no flightlines I was equally frustrated
Cranfield
A chapter in PC's year that just shows the vagaries of pigeon shooting, a good write up. Its that time of year, the birds seem spoiled with the abundant choice before them and do not seem to be committing to anywhere specifically. I suppose you can also assume that half the population are probably sitting on eggs somewhere.
Wilts#Dave
If you had the same success every single week it would be unbelievable pc. You did well to get 33, most wouldn't have clocked up those miles or put in that amount of effort!
Guest
Great write up again a least you got out for some fresh air and 33 less birds feeding, I was out today with 410 on drillings not massive numbers about but managed 17 woodies and 12 Black's for 5 hours but just nice to be out for a while better than tv anyday

kippylawkid
Interesting thread. I too would take £500 to set up a 100 bird day, but I'm fully aware that there are no sure things with pigeons. There is a guy up our way who takes top dollar from foreign "sportsmen", dumps them off all over the borders/Northumberland and lets them get on with it. Fair to say he's not Mr popular around here. Apologies for hijacking your refreshingly normal weekend PC

Most of the experienced lads on here appreciate what goes into shooting a decent bag and the many things that can ruin a day. I'm not sure I'd like to get into the nuts and bolts of counting cartridges to prove a gun has had the opportunity to shoot 100, similar to what many game shoots do. Life's too short for all that. I enjoy taking my pals out and seeing the enjoyment they get from a decent day. No charge of course.
JDog
Because I take on everything within 45m my average is never better than 2:1. I take people out for company, a bit of sport and usually a good laugh (at their expense). There are people on this forum who I would like to shoot with and I must admit there are some who I definitely do not want to shoot with.
