Diesel v Petrol

Just seen this posted on fb http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/you-drive-diesel-car-you-10143144

I think its another bit of hyped reporting but can anyone on here explain to me how me changing my transit from a diesel that does 26mpg to a petrol that would do maybe 13mpg (the last petrol transit i had did 10mpg on a good day) is going to help cut pollution?

Its for built up areas where the distance travelled compared to the time it takes means the emissions from a diesel far outweigh those of a petrol.

Diesels emit far more pollutants than petrol cars but have been labelled as "greener" over the last 20 years or so because of the improved mpg which translates to improved (reduced) pollutants per mile. If you're not going anywhere (inner city traffic) then the that "greener" argument is blown out of the water.

I have ran diesel cars for the last 15yrs & still have one as a second car.The main car that the wife drives is Petrol and returning 67mph with £0 road tax. When she gets her new one I'm getting hers and the son can have the diesel.

Regarding the Transit, Ford are looking at putting their 1ltr 125bhp motor in them.Wife has it in her car and it' still blows me away after 15mths of ownership when I drive it.Its since been off to Mountune for a full mod and it's awesome.

The story as reported is basically true but proposals still in the pipeline will include cars over 10 years old if the militant environmentalist behind all this get their way

They could massively cut the congestion in London if they took out all the stupid cycle lanes with no cycles on them.

The solution to this is to have a petrol one and have it converted to run on LPG less bad stuff out the pipe at the back and much cheaper to run problem solved

If it works that is, some of the conversions in the past have been less than successful. That's even on old cars, modern cars with engine management systems raise lots of issues regarding compatability

We drove a few back in Oz 20 odd years ago, u do lose a bit of power thou and on them u'd turn it back onto petrol every 100km or so to lubricate the carbs.

While petrol engines are very good now it will be a different story trying to pull a heavy work van and 2-3T in a trailer, thats when desiels do come into there own.

So as usual this would really hit the working man, who will just add it on to the price of any work they do so customer gets clobbered too.

Aussies have been at this for ages but the 1 thing they do do and i'm surprised not been picked up on here.

Any LPG conversion has to have a special number plate with a red marking on it, so if its involved in a crash/fire emergancy services know its a potential 'bomb'

My old X reg Jeep cherokee 4ltr auto worked very well on LPG the only problem that I had was the engine computer mostly said there was a problem but it worked ok for the ten years that I had it.

I wish I had not sold it really the problem is I mostly only do short trips so it used petrol to worm the engine about 1/2 mile then switched over to gas so I thought that I would change over to a diesel bad idea as my 2.8 td is not that good on fuel on short runs and it feels like driving a tractor after my lovely 4ltr strait 6 just pured down the road .

I wish that I had just got a petrol one perhaps using a bit more petrol but much nicer to drive if I did longer trips then I would opt for a big petrol engine with an LPG conversion at one time you also did not have to pay the London congestion charge ether.

Yep, go petrol and dual fuel with LPG. I run a 3.9ltr Landie on LPG and believe I get about the equivalent cost wise as 34-35mpg on a run.

OK you have to lay out for the conversion, but if you have a van I assume you do a fair mileage. I used my CSK Range Rover purely for pleasure, no huge mileage and reckon I paid for the conversion in two years in savings.

There is no doubt, those in power have a down on diesels. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, because there are a huge amount of diesel engines running in this country.

It is funny I am not the brightest button in the box but I remember some years ago when the powers that be started to push for diesel cars/truck but even then it was a known fact that diesels were putting out more bad stuff than petrol cars/trucks and I could not understand then why they were not pushing cleaner petrol and even LPG but no.

Over the years there have been lots of things that people say we was not told this or that was bad for us but all of the information was there so how come it was so obvious to me yet people who are much better educated than me could not see it I see it with things all of the time I just do not understand it.

Yep they just did that with the new car Tax 1st April, once everyone started buying cars with either £0 or very low road tax. They wernt gona let us get away with it for long. Edited by Davyo

Hire car firm I work for had to supply a 4x4 for a guy who had knackered a Mitsi PHEV (this for those who don't know is a hybrid battery/small petrol 4x4) which a)returned 20mpg(!) and then b) broke down as he was constantly towing a caravan. He was an eco Warrior who thought he could save the planet and tow a caravan!!!

They have a low towing capacity (the PHEV) but can still tow. Some hybrids aren't rated for towing.
