I started to look for some pigeons for the weekend ,I looked at the usual places i hoped to find some pigeons. I was checking a pea field out that i have previously shot a 68 two weeks earlier, i spied a flight line going over the field but kept going so i followed it only to find they were landing on a sprayed off pea filed. Now i didnt have permission on there and I had no idea who owned it ,several calls later I found the chap who was more than happy for me have a go. The field is 40 acres with a road down one side and a bungalow at one end with the wind coming down the field from the bungalow end, the only place to set up was on the far side against a dyke which was a 350 yard walk. The only down side was that I had promised to take my brother out ,so I had to dump Motty for the day. We carried the gear down to the dyke with two flappers and a rotary and 250 cartridges between us and several litres of drink. The wind was coming over our left shoulder so the rotary was placed to our left about 25 yards out with the two flapper in front. The going was quite slow after we had set up around 10.45 but we had a few customers and it looked like we probably get 50 ish..The birds were either in nicely or very cagey making some very testing shots . After a while I went back to the truck for another rotary ,this was placed close to the other rotary which did seem to help bring more birds in more confidently.Steadily through the afternoon the birds came and at 3 o'clock we hit the ton ,then it went mad with birds coming at us from all directions ,60 more were killed by 4 o'clock and we had to fetch yet more cartridges we called it a day at 6 o'clock with 223 . By the time we had packed up, three trips back to the trucks I arrived home at 8 o'clock to have to sort the birds out and put my gear away.

Excellent report , and another huge bag from two of Norfolk hot shots.

Two things that stick out are , there is still shooting available for those finding it hard to gain access to shoot pigeons , although you need to know what you doing in terms of finding the crop with pigeons on it , whose land it is and meeting the owner in person .

The other one is , the amount of pigeons in your area , we have got pigeons , but I don't know anyone locally who would get bags that you boys often come up with , even if we did have the numbers , seeing that many pigeons and getting a bag as big as that are two different things , so well done, and look forward to seeing many more posts from the boys up North.

Motty ,

I am quite new to this and have never taken home more than about 20 birds.

How long does it take you to sort out 223 ? I would be up all night !

Also how big is your freezer or do you sell them ?

I haven't had the problem of dealing with vast amounts of dead pigeons yet , but have wondered , when the red letter day eventually comes ,what I am going to do with them all . I can't stand the though of wasting them, I have already been giving them away to friends even from the small bags that I have been shooting.

By the way that picture is great , the dogs look like they have thoroughly enjoyed it.

All the best.

This isn't my thread, but I shall answer, all the same.

It does take a while to sort out a bag of 200 or more. As PC has mentioned before, you end up handling each bird several times, from field to game dealer.

If I shoot around 200, I will normally crate them all overnight, then get them to the game dealer. For smaller bags of around 100, I may well leave them to cool off for a couple of hours before putting some in each of my 3 freezers.
