marsh man
I am sure that many of you who have handled pigeons after the days shoot have had one of these land on your arm or worse still on your head from time to time . When one land on my arm , my first reaction is to give it a smack , this normally don't have any affect on the fly whatsoever , it then land again and you hit it even harder , resulting in a painful arm and a fly showing no signs of giving up. To me they look like a flat lice that no doubt stay on the pigeon like fleas do on a Rabbit , or do they just land on a pigeon then jump on me when I disturb it? Some of you will know the proper name ,how to tell the difference from male and female and everything else worth knowing , all very interesting but how do you flatten it on your arm without doing yourself an injury

motty
I call them flat flies. Don't smack them with the palm, they are tough. I use a finger nail on their backs to crush them.
Wilts#Dave
I know exactly the little critters you're talking about.....horrible things, try and crush them between your fingers and they just don't die as you'd expect!
Me matt
Proper horrible things- they really pop when squashed between your fingers.*** having one go in your barnet though think I would have to shave my head...

JDog
Is this the culprit. https://entomologytoday.org/2015/05/18/hippoboscidae-flies-live-birth/ It will only be C. canariensis that we pigeon shooters ever encounter.

dazb1967
There seems to be more than usual around this year, when I lay the pigeons in the back of the pick up you can see them crawling across the pigeons, I don't think Ive seen one flying around, only ever seem to see them crawling through the feathers.Horrible things. Terry2016
I have encountered on many occasions, on both crows and pigeons, I just grab them and pull the wings off.. If you bat them away they are straight back lol can't get rid of them... atb
