Frustrating Day to say the Least

We started the day at 09.00 and had no idea where to look for birds. The acorn crop had split the flocks into splitter flocks of approx fifty birds flitting from oak to oak, which you could set up for them they would just move to another tree. I had seen some birds on cut maize on Friday but I thought it was on Bunny_Blasters land and left it , but I did inform him. So we started driving around our shoots looking for bean stubble. By 11.30 we had completed seventy miles and not found them or any stubble. We came up to one field that we remembered was beans to find the farmer ploughing them in but the birds were still dropping on the plough from yesterday. After thirty minute of grovelling he still would not let us shoot so we parked up and decided to phone some more farmers. The next three calls confirmed that the beans had been ploughed in, the fourth said he had one small field of stubble but he had seeded wheat and beans yesterday and it had a few birds flying around so we drove to the farm and scanned the bean stubble to see approx fifty birds down. Due to the rain last week we only had five decoys so two on the magnet and three on the seed beans with the magnet on the edge of the bean stubble with the hide in the hedge between both fields. All set up for 13.00 , let the battle comence, the first few shots lifted a good number of birds out of the wood behind us and the decoying was hectic with twenty birds at a time trying to get into area around the three decoys. The first lull we had allowed us to pick up eighteen further decoys. After near thirty years of shooting together out of the same hide we have a system , we take it in turns, after two shots the first shooter hits the deck and the second shooter picks off what he can. This enables us the maximise the number of birds shot without us crossing barrels or being dangerous in any way. The shooting was consistant and we stopped at 16.30 as the rain started and was heavy and we did not want to loose the decoys for another week. We had completed ninety miles and managed to shoot 128 pigeon and four corvids in three and a half hours, which was a great end to the day that had been very frustrating at the begining.
