whilst loading for a gun the other day another gentleman who lives not far from me asked if I would teach his son to shoot. He has adequate land and a trap.

I have taught and mentored many new shooters in the past but not for payment.

what is the going rate per hour for personal instruction.

You would need liability insurance and a adequate qualification to under go such tuition, if your a member of BASC I would contact them first, best of luck chap.

why do you think he would need liability insurance or a qualification?

Ian, rates will vary depending on the experience/reputation of the coach, competition in that area, etc.  Also depends if you are supplying a gun for use and cartridges, clays, etc.

£50/hour for time only will not be far away from the market rate for an experienced instructor.

Thanks that's not far off what I was thinking.

for the record, I am an accredited loader with the NGO (certificate and loaders id) I also have insurance with the NGO which covers me for loading as well as the usual shooting, not sure about instructing though so will have to check.

This is an informal arrangement and shooting will take place on the gentlemans land (ample shot fall etc) his trap, clays, cartridges and gun.

If this is a 'one off', why charge? No payment = no comeback. Apart from that, the £s that you charge will soon disappear over the forthcoming frivolities. On the other hand, payment in kind can be of a more permanent nature.

might even have an invitation to some shooting

to be honest wymberley at this stage I don't know how regular it will be, I am loading for the same Gun next Tuesday on another estate and I believe the gentleman in question is also attending so I would think we will discuss matters further then. We had very little time on Monday as he only asked me as I was returning my Guns gun after having cleaned it and they were on there way into the hall for there meal.

From the few posts I've seen you seem like the right guy for the job. Pretty patient in the other thread and helped me improve my shot and I haven't even met you so I'm sure you'll do well as a paid instructor. Let me know if you ever do lessons in the North West mate.

your very kind Dan I am glad that my input (along with other members on that thread) was of help.

I am north west my friend ?

I have mentored and advised many shooters over the years and enjoyed doing so without ever a mention of payment, however on this occasion the gentleman approached me whilst I was carrying out a job as a "professional" (loading / minding) and asked if I also offered "instruction" therefore he obviously intends to pay for this service. It is a totally different scenario to advising a friend, acquaintance or someone on a clay ground that you happened to have got talking to. ?

Hi,

My last post was not aimed at yourself, but was simply in reply to Bruno and was mainly about myself. What I described was the first ever batch of coaches for a particular organisation. With one exception if I remember correctly, the students making up the first course of instruction were a particular bunch and all we had to do was turn up and pay attention. We paid nothing for the course or accommodation and were reimbursed for travelling expenses.

When I say "all we had to do", that was a bit of an understatement because several very intensive, long and traumatic days later there was just a little matter of proving to gerry Turner, John King, Chris Craddock and Mike Aldis that we had actually listened.

In return, we turned up and did the business whenever or wherever we were asked and were unpaid. We did so because we saw the need and it also gave pleasure particularly when the youngsters were involved.

Have a good chat to the fella when you next load for him, if he is happy to pay you that's fine, but could he get you some pigeon shooting? He might well know folk with land, its not what you know but who, you might do a few hours tuition over a few weeks, probably keep getting him asking you to load for him, could well be a good situation for you?
