D and J Cartridges

Recommended Posts

To be perfectly honest I do not find D&J cartridges any better or worse than similar priced cartridges. If they have to be loaded to a price then the powder, shot and other components are not going to be as good as a cartridge costing twice as much.

For those who can remember the Sellier and Bellot Rabbit control cartidges which you used to be able to get were horrible, filthy dirty and kicked like a mule on steroids.

Baikal Cartridges were no better, apart from they were incredibly hard hitting. The cheaper eleys and hull are all the same. How does the saying go?

"You get what you pay for"

I use Express World Cup for all clay shooting in plastic or fibre wad and have noticed no difference between them.

Just justifying my criticism.

Yes they are cheap but I don't find them as good as other cheap felt wad carts. I find them inconsistent. I have shot less than 100 of these, about 10 different people at different times gave me a few to try and I found about 5 under powder, a lot considering how many I have used.

Assuming something comes out the end of the gun the shot is terrible, soft and won't break edge on targets. There is also the recoil, punchy for what they are. Because of the powder variation in them, or perhaps the quality of the powder or manner its loaded, they sometimes fly out of the gun, other times they barely make it.

Impossible to have any confidence in them, the last thing you need is being bang on a clay and it doesn't break because the shot is **** or there wasn't enough powder in the case.

i shot my first 25 straight at skeet with D&Js :good: they are what they are though, cheap and cheerful and like oters have said "you get what pay for". if you want a cartridge that performs and is consistent then you need to pay for it. black golds are my cartridge of choice at the minute.

I've shot these before and they are perfectly adequate, and i'm happy to use them when i have to. I have to agree that they do leave alot of crud in the barrel which i can live with.

Pin, it sounds like you got some psychological issues with these cartridges which i can understand, i can't shoot with lyalvale cartridges becuase i have no confidence in them after a bad batch once.

Poacher: You could very well be right my friend. It's all about "if they work for you" at the end of the day.

Same with gun choice and chokes, as well as any other variable up to and including your favourite mascot :good:

I posted up about these D & J cartridges here : -

and I'm still shooting my way through the 500 which I had. The gun takes a lot of cleaning to remove leading, far more than any other cartridge I have ever encountered in 20 years. Perhaps the plaswads would be better but I only shoot fibre.

D & J Cartridges? OK for me! I don't waste time looking up barrels for 'dirt'. Some of you sound like Fairy Liquid adverts!

These are sound, inexpensive shells loaded with NobelSport GM3 and good shot. (Pigeons don't like them!)

Talking about clean-burning - have any of you ever heard of 'bore-washing' or erosion?

Give me a 'cheap' 'dirty' cartridge any day!

  • 3 years later...

I began shooting with D&J's and at the time thought they were ok.

I was hitting targets just as well as when I used one or two other shells that

people let me fire.

One slight niggle is that they seem to recoil more than other 28gr loads. As such

I only fire them through my semi auto.

They do make the barrells more dirty than other shells but it's not as though

the barrells become clogged after 50 shots.

I would say that for the clay shooter who is working to a budget they are fine.

Did they ever fix the issue of the cartridge base being stripped off in semi autos? I seem to remember a couple of people on here saying it had happened to them.

I avoid them for this very reason, the thought of anything being returned into the bore on top of a live shell is a bit scary.
