Mungler
They’re a bit of a classic now. Anyone on here had or got one? Apart from the Italian tin worm, anything to note / watch out for? Cheers all
washerboy
I've driven a mark 1 that a friend owned, it was like a goldfish bowl if I remember, loads of glass and not much metal. I drove it down a riverbank that my astra would have got stuck in. I always wanted one but at them time had the usual garbage, escorts, clapped out cortina etc https://www.motorious.com/articles/features/349736/fiat-panda-4x4-mki-and-mkii-buying-guide
figgy
Fantastic light car, friends had them. Nothing really model soecific to watch for the sisley 4x4 is a good one but if abused could get expensive. The engines and electrics were used across many cars. As you stated rust is your main enemy. You must have liked the one James may drove in the Grand Tour. Parts could be a problem and need sourcing from Europe. What's making you look at one of these ? Walker570
I remember seeing one take on a Range Rover on youtube. Could be a cheap UTV alternative.
Mungler
I always wanted one (for nostalgia) and I'm on the scent at present. A friend of mine with a gaff in Italy said "you don't see any farmers selling them" i.e. they buy them and never let go of them. Indeed, the last time I was out there, everyone seemed to have a Mk1 Panda and so there must be a plentiful supply of parts. It's a small 4x4 that fits into a garage that a newly passed driver could actually insure and they ain't getting any cheaper. Following on, they seemed like not a bad buy. Also they are small and cheap enough that if something catastrophic happened you could always roll it into a ditch or lose it on eBay. I'll let you all know how I get on. Several of my Italian shooting pals have them. Their Mercs come and go but the little Fiats seem to stay, used as a runabout by all the family. McSpredder
Maybe worth looking at this web forum: https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-classic/
ph5172
I always wanted one, spent ages looking for one (thus was a few years ago) got to see it and the wife promptly turned around and went and sat in the car. Never did buy it and I regret it now. If I recall they were used as rescue cars by the swedes due the the good entry and exit angle as there was virtually no overhang
KronKron
Chap on another forum I frequent built this. Quite capable by all accounts.
GingerCat
Not too good in a crash though. Puts me off them.
Walker570
Good idea to put an integral roll frame in to competition/rally standards. If your spending that much on preparation then the extra would be worth it. I see they are fetching £2--3000 in Itly and Spain when they do come up for sale. Cracking little tool. 3 minutes ago, GingerCat said: Not too good in a crash though. Puts me off them.
figgy
Big wheels roll cage roof rack large spare. Best upgrade the brakes and drop another engine in as the 999cc unit is not powerful enough.

I looked at the panda 4x4 as a run about for the wife as some of these lanes get nasty in the winter. Mostly mud and gunk from fields as well as the odd sprinkle of snow. Having seen the 0 star ncap report I stoped looking.shame really as they do seem fun. Edited June 16, 2019 by GingerCat
figgy
I'd go Zook Jimny, does all you want small and cheap.
m3vert
I have seen first hand how they stack up in a crash! Wouldn't ever sit in one far less let a loved one in one. Shocking to say the least. Wide swerve I would say :-)
Walker570
I don't think I would buy one to drive on the road. They would make a useful cross country 'truck' and half the price of a UTV.
