Plas to fibre

Recommended Posts

In theory subbing a fibre where a plas once lived will not create more pressure, but equally it might not perform the way iy did as a plaswad either. Its just not practical. and really needs testing. But if anything most times it will make less pressure not typically more. Do yourself a favour, just buy fibres. Its not practical.

I've already got some plas that no doubt I will use before these 5 years are up but now I'm limited on where I can use them.

I've got a slab of melior vit 33 no4's and I've found them ideal on rabbits in the past. Hopefully will be doing a bit more shooting this year and if the ground I'm after comes off it will be mainly rabbits and fibre only.

Just wanted to know how feasible it was, I won't be buying any plas from now on apart from clay loads.

Just get some new cases and transfer the shot and mayne the primer. You don't know what powder is in there so tip that in a sfe place like over your lawn as it is good fertilizer.  Not worth risk of blowing yourself up.

How would you transfer the primer please?

Just pop it out and pop it back in.  Not difficult at all and do it frequently when a shell goes wrong. Waste not want not.  Do it with the de primer on my loader...careflly of course... but no different to pushing it in.  Unless your stoking up on powder to dangerous levels the primer will not be a big problem on pressures.  Been reclaiming them for 40yrs not a problem.

When the gunshops start selling replacment left hands at £120 a thousand I'll maybe consider it. Until then I'll not do it. Why not just sell the plastic wad cartridges that you have and use the money to buy fibre wadded cartridges?

Because it's not worth selling them, I'll just use them up where I can. Been looking around but can seem to find anything comparable in lead fibre.

I think it's probably, yes, the safer option just to use them where and when it's permitted. The worry I'd have is a change in pressure caused by the change of wad from plastic to fibre and also at the other end of the spectrum a loose re-crimp giving low pressure such that you have a wad that doesn't exit the barrel when the shot is fired.

Wow! That's a long old slog. Yes I can see why that's not realistic. I am registered on The Saleroom Dot Com (well that's how you say it not write it of course). It costs nothing and you can search using the keyword "cartridges" and indeed also set a distance from any postcode you'd care to input. There are a good few rural auctions where odd lots come up in a general sale of interest to us shooting folk. Hope it helps!

Cheers I'd not seen that one before, I'll give it a look.

The problem with Holt's is that on a map it doesn't look that far but anyone who's been to the king's Lynn area should be able to vouch that it's no where near anything 😂 it's all piddly B roads that make it such a drag. I got away with going last time cause I told the missus we'd have a blast along the coast road to Cromer, (one of my favourites) and get her a crab along the way.

I'd use alphamax but don't fancy paying £11+ a box 😬
