marsh man
We are fast approaching the time of the year where my Pigeon gear is put at the back of the shelves in the garage and my wildfowling gear move to the front , mind you if the opportunity arises where a day at Pigeons present itself then it can quickly come back into play . Well , after two and a half days of strong winds and heavy rain the marshes have become water logged virtually overnight and now look promising for a chance at a duck , I was in two minds to go down Saturday night but with heavy drizzle and the threat of more rain I thought I would leave it till the conditions calmed down a bit , today started off dull but as the day wore on it was becoming brighter by the hour , I finished sealing around my new conservatory roof by mid afternoon and took my dog for a quick walk around the field before a cup of tea and a rest before I venture out again . After another gup of tea and watching the end of the chase and the beginning of the news it was time to make a move , as the marshes are only a few minutes away it didn't long before I was putting on my water boots , my old faithful coat and my game bag for the first time this season , walking down the lane it seemed fairly light so I wasn't in any great hurry but with the sun going down I knew it would soon change , getting to the first gate I was greeted by thirty to forty horses , I know these are not to much bother as I often walk over during the day and they more or less ignore you , to be on the safe side I walked around the edge of the dyke rather than cut across the marsh where I could have been surrounded by some young lively horses , having walked round four marshes with no mishaps I was finally at the large splash of water where I intended to flight , we hear a lot from members where they are happy just to watch the sunrise or sunset and tonight was as good as it get but as much as I like a good sunset my intention is to try and get a duck , sitting on my fold up stool the light was now at the stage where you could expect to see duck , my mind was wandering when a couple of duck came out of the darkness and crossed the water in front of me , after a quick shot I could see one carrying on at the same level while the other one was gaining height , Bobbie my dog didn't need telling twice and he was off running through the water as if it was dry land and when he came back he had one very livery Widgeon in his jaws , the first one of the new season , over the next ten to fifteen minutes I managed to get two more and missed a couple which I was very happy with , now with aging eyes I can no longer see when the light is gone and with three duck It was time to head back , walking back the same way around the edge of the dykes the horses must have settled down for the night as I got back to my motor with no sign of them , tonight I timed it from when I started my motor to when I was reversing in my driveway and it was four minutes and forty eight seconds , now that is what you call precise timing . I will try and put a photo on tomorrow , Thanks for reading MM.

Old Boggy
What a wonderful account of your trip out. Clearly your experience tells you the ideal flight time to ensure success. Many thanks for sharing and please continue with your detailed posts throughout the season. As the season goes on and dusk falls earlier, you will have to forego watching the Chase before venturing out 😂. A small sacrifice for your forays out in wild places. Many thanks for posting and keep them coming MM. OB

Old Boggy
Just to add, whilst I know that your passion amongst others is wildfowling, perhaps also posting in ‘Talk from the Field’ would reach a greater audience to benefit from your interesting tales, namely those who wouldn’t automatically look at the Wildfowling section and therefore would miss out on your great posts. Keep them coming however though. Always a good and informative read. You’ve still got time to write that book 👍 OB

I thoroughly enjoyed the episodes TGS did with @mudpatten, i love the idea and romance of spending a bit of quite time down on the marshes with the possibility of a bird or two. I know a bloke who's a member of one of the local clubs, when I've got a bit more time, finances and fitness to dedicate I might just ask if I can tag along with him. With the very kind help from Zapp and Teal I have worked out how to put a photo back on , these were taken in very bad light as we have had nearly non stop and last night was dry when I went out but rained again when I was down the marsh , while down there the horses came over to say they are not the only one who are wet

Much appreciated. Bobbie looks pleased with himself. Lovely looking marsh. Keep up with the hunter gathering. You’ll not starve I’m sure 😂 Well done 👍 Chris
