Macca72
I've just been given a number of old cartridges from a farm I shoot on. It's a Marshall Diesel engine power start cartridge, 12 bore Eley Kynoch brass, paper case good condition. Has anyone any information about this? Thanks
London Best
Used for starting Field Marshall tractors. Big single cylinder engines, I think. Plenty of videos on this. Edited February 23, 2021 by London Best
TIGHTCHOKE
Similar versions were used on Spitfires and Chipmunks.

Centrepin
Early Military vehicles had a similar cold start system. I remember using a similar sort of cartridge in Austria, Bavaria and Switzerland.

You should see the ones that started the Hunter (et al).

London Best
I have never been involved with any military stuff, just farming in the days when some of the older farmers still worked Field Marshalls.

That would account for the 'Chipmunks' singing with those squeaky voices then ?? I have a farmer friend with a collection of Marshalls and still uses 12 bore cartridges to start them. mel b3
Please excuse my ignorance. Is the starter cartridge just filled with powder ?, how much powder ?, and what part of the engine does the pressure turn ( where is the pressure applied) ? , could you homeload ?. TIGHTCHOKE
Basically a big blank to turn the early stages of the fan or to get pistons moving in older engines. Home-loading would be possible on the percussion fired versions. Jet engine carts are often electrically fired.
