Still just dark at 6am at the moment 👍 Blimey, its light and 08:45 here, never realised the massive time difference between civilisation and the DARK ages. Fisheruk
If you are worried about the cost of feed then flip top feeders are the way to go. Very selective squirrels lift the lid for the feed, but birds don’t. Edited April 4, 2022 by Fisheruk
Fisheruk
Small feeders if you can top up regularly, or larger if it is only every couple of weeks.

When you can consistently get out and effectively clear an area of greys you have the pleasure of watching Reds, if they are near enough to recolonise. I've read differing opinions on these, people saying they clog up? Hopefully they work great, because they won't get chewed

Hopefully they work great, because they won't get chewed They have a nice steep ramp in the base so look like they will work fine. I have been on holiday for 10 days and left them up filled with peanuts so I will be able to confirm when I get home. That’s assuming the squirrels have found them and know how to operate them! Agriv8 I have been hitting them early..they seem to appear about 7.45 -8am at the moment although only one appeared on the pear tree this morning.. probabbly because a dozen or more have departed this world in the last month. Crashing tree rat numbers certainly increases both small bird and woodpeckers in a wood but remember woodpeckers also like baby birds. Agriv8
Hi walker 570 as the game season has ended and a good number of drays shot out arround the feeders while walking the woods through ! to the point where the spaniel will sit bellow the dray just in case I have winged one ! She has got 2 runners so far ! will update the running total - had a wonder round my farmer mate wood and we have at leat 3 greater wood peckers so will stock up the feeder and blow the drays through! Before the leaf cover returns. At the very least if the dog takes to killing them it is likely to become hard mouthed and start squeezing other game. The very first squirrel I shot, aged 13 sixty years ago, was not dead and when I picked it I received a nasty bite to the back of my hand. Agriv8
The joys of spaniel ownership London best - she bought my dad back a live mallard last night which she sat and presented. She looked quite disappointed when dad let it waddle off quacking away ! got bitten by a grey myself it was in a feeding bin thaT I was taking a panfull of grain out of on the last drive going through one of the roosts - will have been a similar age 12 /13 ! Remember it well hanging of my finger ! Then a roasting from my old man for letting the bu66er go ! but yes take your point that it not the safest training! But maybe there is some Jack Russell in her blood line as she likes to grad them from behind to keep away from claws and teeth ! atb Agiv8
