I ran a very big forum for a while and there wasn't much to it really as everyone got along.

Pretty much all the trouble was caused by a single individual that just posted rubbish purely to wind everyone else up. I eventually banned him for being an idiot and the place was so much better for it and should have been done long before.

Generally the place ran itself other than as said above with moving stuff to the right section, etc. The biggest job was reminding people what their password was.

I use quite a few forums on various topics and have always thought the one with the most members least suitable to be gun owners were the shooting forums.

The problem with banning the idiots is they just reappear with a different ip address they moan about the forum but seemly cant live with out it and feel everybody is interested in there every move .

Yes they can sign in with a different name etc but in the case I mentioned the idiot always spelled a particular word wrong, whenever you were suspicious you just checked how their spelling of this particular word that they used very regularly. It must have baffled him how I cottoned on to him so quick. :)

After joining and trying to use a camping forum recently (as Mrs H and I getting in to camping), I had to throw in the towel after about 6 weeks. Other members were fine, it was just the admin and mods. I know you guys have standards to meet and it isn't a democracy, per se, but the forum in question was practically socialist in the way they redacted some posts and even delete whole posts, plus restricting ones ability to post replies and new threads.

So, it led me thinking if anyone, outside of Teal and his crew of mods, have had any experience of starting up and running a forum or even just working within one moderating.

I spend a lot of time deleting sales posts and what’s it worth posts on a Landrover forum. Only really had a few minor issues to deal with

But you would even get banned from your own forum!

You could invite Burnley Dave to be a mod too

I ended up deleting the forum on my website.  Thankless task and would have had to spend far too much time policing idiots just out to troll other members' posts and create circular arguments.  On the flip side, I was myself banned from a hifi site when it transpired I hadn't been vaccinated!  (what that had to do with a hifi forum is anyone's guess).  There are a lot of forums (not this one) run by people scared silly of thought police if anyone posts anything remotely anti-PC.  Wokeness has really taken a grip in the UK and mostly, it results in uncharitable untruths and loss of freedom of speech.  It's only that type of thing I have a problem with.  On my own site, I wouldn't tolerate foul language, ad hominem attacks or anything lewd being posted.  Other than that, people were free to have reasoned discussions as long as it was kept civil.

I am on insta gram and i dared to disagree with a wildlife trust and their initial what do you think of us releasing pine marten positive spin.

They started deleting posts and emailing me direct - it was raining so every time they deleted - i reposted with more information - questioning why they were deleting because it made the whole thread look pro release. They eventually gave up and mu comments are still on - and have encouraged sensible - mainly - discussion.

Good on you.

Certain groups only like echo chambers. Well done for persevering.

Sorry to hear that Ditchman.  I can empathise as my mother has dementia (I'm one of her carers) and lost Dad to it a couple of years ago. Best mate I ever had...miss him terribly.  Been living as a carer for them both for some years.  Happy to have a chat on PM if it helps you at all.

In case you hadn't realised, they're all as mad as a box of frogs 👍 It's the ones without any cats that tend to catch us out. The ones with cats are easy to work out how mad they are. The more cats, the madder. (sorry welsh1, hadn't meant to drag cats into it but it is purely for scientific purposes 😉)
