I had to think about it, as I hardly drink at home apart from the occasional bottle of wine with a meal.

But on a boys night out I would probaly have 5 or 6 pints.

Then one lunchtime a week at work, 2 pints maximum.

So averaged out over a week, that makes me 'low risk' or a bit of a lightweight

A few people on here have made reference to being tea total, so that number may also be surprising.

A quick calculation based only on alcohol comsumed at home resulted in 105 units a week (measurements taken form the side of a tinnie) Which shows this farcial situation for what it really is.

Perhaps they could do us all a favour and expand the nanny state attitude further and set some limits for the use of block and skunk thus getting even more headlines to distract us form the poor state of the country that they are governing.

Guess that one would appear in the Guardian first

In 1990, I moved to Paderborn in West Germany (pre unification). In the NAAFI bar then; a pint cost 50pf (16.6 pence) and fags were 65pf (21.6 pence) a pack.

In the early '90's I had a medical for a HGV licence with an Army MO. He asked me if I drunk more than the recommended level.

I ask him much that was and he said 21 units, or about 10 - 11 pints.

"No Sir, 10 pints is about my limit" I said. "What, per week?" he optimistically enquired.

"No Sir!" I replied. "Not per night?" he pessimistically retorted.

"No Sir, per session" - I can't print his answer.

More recently, the wife and I found we had both gotten in to the habit of coming home from work and pouring ourselves a drink, open a bottle of wine or cracking in to six-pack. It's quite rare now, for us to drink mid-week - but TBH it's more to do with attempted weight loss than straight forward abstinence. Last weekend I saw off 6 tins & 2/3 of a bottle of red, which is probably no more than 21 units.

If it's decent booze, it can't be bad for you.

I know I drink more than I should, but that is why I stopped drinking during the week and try and take it easy on the weekends. Drinking messes you up and is bad for you, if nothing more than meaning you spend the next day feeling rubbish and hungover when you could be out shooting.

Drinking at home during the week is the big issue we got into the habit of a bottle of red a night then when it started getting to 2 bottles I thought it was getting silly so rarely drink much during the week now. Might have 10 pints over the weekend but thats still in theory within the limits.

Problem is that it is so easy to go over the limit without even trying on a regular basis, for example

Monday - meet up with a mate for 3 magners and fruit machines - 7.8 units

Tuesday - nothing

Wednesday - nothing

Thursday - nothing

Friday - 2 pints at lunch and then 5 in the evening at the pub - 18.2

Saturday - half a bottle of wine and maybe a JD & coke if staying in - 5 units

Sunday - half a bottle of wine with sunday lunch - 3 units

Total for week, taking it easy with no big sessions or b'days = 34 units!

Think if you write it out and have a look it's easy to see places to cut down, swapping a couple of ciders with cokes in between rounds and only 1 pint on a Friday lunch could get me down to 26.2 but who am I kidding.

Don't drink mid week now, or very rarely small glass of wine maybe but at weekend like to relax and socialise. Looking at intake I would need to be less socialable and more stressed :lol:

But as my ol gran used to say it's rude to count, so where's the bottle opener!

I would say that up to the age of 45 years I probaly drank less than 4 units a week but then only over the holiday periods ie Christmas, Summer Vacation. I'm now 59 and and VERY rarely touch the stuff. They say as you get older that you consume less alcohol and it does appear to be the case for me. I have a bottle of Lagavulin single malt that my wife bought me for Christmas 2002 and it's still 75% full - what a sin!

Far too much .50 units plus.Never a night off.I see you guys as my Doctor. If I told my own then probably would impact on my mortgage cover etc.Dry last night for certain reasons and may have a long dry spell.I blame coming from a booze culture area plus being weak and stupid.Buried a friend of family yesterday.booze a big factor in killing him.His kid my kids best friend.

Should be ashamed me being in health care and all. There you have it.I too am a fully functioning bloke, would never drink and drive or be violent. Its a bad drug.

Don't know about 50 units, but the last time I saw the nurse at the Well Man clinic she told me that 'binge drinking' or having a few once in a while, in none tabloid words, is far better for you then drinking a bit every day.

No word from Berettaman1 yet? guess he may be waiting for new batteries for his calculator
