Mens skeet at the olympics

Recommended Posts

Team GB men last contested this event back in 2012, but not at all since then. We seem to be able to send very strong contenders for the women's event every games, but no longer for the men. Does anyone know why this is so?

As far as I can make out GB shooters still do well at world and European skeet championships, and up until it was omitted from the Birmingham commonwealth games, we always did very well.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I'm also sure someone on here will know the answer.

For a nation to compete in the  Olympic Games clay shooting disciplines their shooters have to win a 'Quota Place' during the three year period leading up to the Games.

The QPs are available to be won at World Cup, Continental and World Championships.

Each nation can only win a maximum of 2 QPs in each discipline and a shooter can only win one QP.

The Commonwealth Games is entirely different as each of the home countries have their own selection process to pick their teams.

So sadly our male skeet shooters haven't been good enough to win a QP in the last few years. The process will start again next year in the lead up to the 2028 games.

Thanks for the answer. Maybe we should campaign for sporting to be included in the next Olympics....

I shot a fair amount of skeet in the 1980s and was half decent. Whilst on holiday, I visited Haverford West shooting ground and shot some Olympic skeet and came unstuck. I had been shooting with a Remington 1100 30" trap gun, cut down to 28". I struggled with the increased speed of the clays and the weight of my Remmy. I got rid of it as soon as I got home. 🙂

I still have an 1100 now - mainly for nostalgia, but I still believe they are the best handling auto ever made.

Because skeet is BORING.   :w00t:

Once upon a time it was all there was (apart from the classic farm field hay bale clay shoot) if you didn't like trap. Here in Leicestershire the Wildfowlers' Ground at Kibworth had THREE skeet layouts side by side and at weekends there was always a wait to go out. My side of the county at the late Walter Benbow's Normanton venue it was DTL and Trench. Nowadays English Sporting rules the roost but outside of the UK I think that skeet and trap still hold sway?

Kibworth, possibly one of the untidiest grounds I have ever known, like shooting at the council tip. Thankfully someone took it on and improved the place

Normanton where the backdrop to blaze clays was a field of rape in full flower, yes that was interesting.

English Sporting does indeed rule the roost and long may it continue.

Over the years I have tried all of the disciplines and ALWAYS return to the simplicity of English Sporting.

I think the blockade for 'Sporting ' could well be the 'ENGLISH' prefix  ??  Now Compak Sporting is a possibility   ??

Possibly - well OK yes, but I CAN watch it on TV because at least you can see the clays break.

I have spent a few of evenings on you-tube at home catching up on old events involving Amber Hill/Rutter, it's a lot better than watching sporting shoots (my sport) where you can't see the clays at all.

But then none of these are really designed to be spectator sports, more for the participant.

Yes of course but it makes Boring TV

Oh! another thing - the person who thought it would be a good idea to play loud music at skeet events should be tied up on a chair and made to listen to AC/DC at full volume for 24 hours straight!

The Trap gun certainly was. Mine fell apart in a Competition near to Dublin  !

That was in the days when Trappies just got on with it, and didn't complain about the odd empty case landing by their feet.   😂

Should revive Starshot and have that at the Olympics. I used to love watching it on tv.

Blimey, that brings back some memories.

I believe it is still going and turns up at the country shows now and again.

The late Colin Bridge of the Country Way Gun Shop got me tickets for the filming years ago when BBC 2 made the series. Bob Champion and Ian Botham were shooting that evening and they filmed two episodes.

I got in to shooting it and it was great fun, I had a barrel for my Remington 1100 that was cut to 24" and filed out to get as much spread as possible for number 11 and 12.
