Bear68
I've just bought an AYA No.2 (12 bore with 1/8 and 1/2 choke) which will mainly be used for 'average' driven pheasants- nothing at extreme heights. I've used OU's for 20+ years with Black Gold or similar which might be a bit lively in a sxs. The above are 28gm of 6.5 shot which should meet my needs. They can also be ordered with paper cases, which would take me back to my early shooting days. The only problem is they are mail order only, with a minimum of 250, so it's not possible to buy a couple of boxes to try. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has used this cartridge, as I'm thinking of ordering a couple of slabs.
oldypigeonpopper
Hello, I was going to say in my AYA i used Eley Impax but they are topping £100 per 250 , Those Monarchs look nice cartridges just like we used back in the 1970s 1980s
matone
Used quite a lot of Monarchs, both before and after Eley took over the loading. I`d say they were quite a hot load tbh and only put them through o/u guns.Very effective tho` !
wymberley
If availability is a problem, you could try something mainstream. The problem now though is 6&1/2s. Try Lyalvale Express Supreme Game.
JDog
Give Hull Imperial Game 26g a try.
Westley
I have been using Fiocchi 28 gram, fibre wad 6's. As they are 65mn I have used them in both my Westley Richards and AyA No.2. They seem to kill well enough and are low on recoil, but they are a bit dirty. They are also reasonably priced.

Have you a source for these, in the north of the country, as they sound well worth trying. Imperial Game prices just keep rising and rising ! Thanks. enfieldspares
Personally with the choke you have and if you are NOT expecting a notable amount of partridge or woodcock I'd use my father's preferred load. 1 1/8 ounce English #5. Having said that in my father's actual gun which I have bored to IMP and IMP in both barrels I have used RC Professional Game 28 gram Italian #7 with a fibre wad. An Italian #7 being here an English #6 1/2. I find that yes they kill but they don't fold the birds dead in the air as spectacularly do the 1 1/8 #5 which are Lyalvale Supreme Game. I sold all my paper cased stuff at auction last year...Hull and Lyalvale...as nice as they are they don't like damp and if too old they suffer from case mouth erosion. Bear68
Thanks for the replies. It'll will probably come down to a straight choice between the Caledonians and Hull Imperial. @matonethanks for mentioning the Monarchs are quite hot, I hadn't factored that in for such a light load. Best really but I not too fussed as this pond is in commercial forestry which in two years won’t be there and will be a quarry . All top soil is graded so single use plastics , stones, waste, metal etc all gets removed.
