Feltwad
The upper reaches of Wear dale and Teesdale is where grouse driving first began prior to that it was walking up shooting over pointers and setters I prefer this it was best at the beginning of the season before birds became too wild especially if I was using a muzzle loader Feltwad

Good things come to an end. Sorry to hear that Daz , as you rightly say that all , Good things come to a end , we don't give it much of a thought around these parts as far as Grouse are concerned but at one time it used to be on the main news of shooting Grouse on the 12th in the morning then getting them down to London to be served on a posh menu the same evening , nowadays the protesters would stone or set light to the place so maybe it no longer get a mention , sign of the times we are living in . Poor Shot
18 hours ago, jall25 said: But is that not cutting off your nose to spite your face Scutt ? My thoughts also. It's exactly what NatureScott and Scottish government wanted when they introduced the licensing scheme. First to go will be the smaller, private shoots as licensing would be too much of a hassle to make it worth while followed by the bigger shoots when licensing become more and more onerous as time goes by. Eventually grouse shooting goes the same way as fox hunting and is consigned to the history books. The same as the game bird release licensing scheme in Wales. Just a method of banning shooting without outright banning shooting and one day we'll all look back and wonder *** happened and where did it go? If it was only a couple of hours walking about once a year. And not a organised commercial shoot.

It makes no difference - you would still be breaking the law - risking everything for couple of hours walk about and casting a shadow over our passion Im not in any way irate or wound up tbh

London Best
All I can say is this: if it means you can never afford to shoot a driven pheasant again….you must go and shoot some driven grouse. It is the absolute epitome of shotgunning.
JohnfromUK
I was lucky enough to do several days walked up every year for around 25 years when I was younger. 6 (possble) days in a week in Scotland was around £600 per person including full board in a sporting lodge. In practice, weather etc. used to make it more like 4 or 5 days, but it's a young man's game. Fantastic sport, but hard walking and you need to be pretty fit. Not done any for about 4 or 5 years now. The last year we went, 3 of us walked with pointers for around 4 hours and saw two shootable birds. Bagged one of them. Walked out over the moor (gently) last year with a few of us and dogs - no shooting, (just nice to be out on the moor) as stocks to low and only saw one bird I could have shot at. Few more got up well out of range. Just very few birds on the ground now. I will be doing the same walk again this September I hope. It is surprising how much harder walking is when carrying a gun at the ready walking 'in line' compared to just walking casually with dog and stick.
