It is odd how one individuals body and mind becomes strangely accustomed in mildy opressive working enviroments, and unsocial hours, whereas others cannot. I know some who 'loved' working nights and were on them for years. Long shifts are no good to man nor beast, and I am still doing them after 35 years. At least now I don't do nights any more. When I worked in coronary intensive care in the very early 90's we used to do a straight 7 day week of nights, which was a 84 hour week, and by the 5th night you could be mildly little stir crazy. Fortunately this was followed by a few days off, then back onto two weeks of days, then back to the nights, done that for 3 years. I do not miss it. Many of my friends work some horrendous hours in all types of jobs any i respect them for that. I am very fortunate now, I work two 14 hour shifts per week across any of the 7 days and on top of that i do one or two locum sessions in gp land each week, each session is just 4 hours. atb When we had deep mines in this country, for half the year the miners would go to work in the dark, spend all day underground in next to no light, then come home in the dark. Weekends were the only time they saw daylight.

She’s enjoying it immensely and looks like she’s found her place.
marsh man
Before my father retired off the railway he used to work three shifts , 6am till 2pm , 2pm till 10 pm and then the night shift 10pm till 6am , that one he hated and could never get used to it , no sooner had his body started to get used to it he was then back on the next shift , I can still see him now when he was getting on his bike to peddle two miles to the railway station in the pitch dark when it was blowing and raining hard and very often cold and snowing in the Winter time , he was a tough ole bugxer and never had a driving lesson in his life let alone a car . Miserableolgit
My son is in maintenance engineering which requires him to work both nights and days. His previous place had a strange shift pattern that changed as time went on but did not seem to give him much time between working a few days then having to go in for a few days of nights with only a short break in between. His present place demands a couple of day of day shift, a couple of days off then a couple of nights with being on call at times. I don't think I could cope with that kind of chopping and changing but I did work permanent nights for a few years back in the 70's. I got on well with that if the hours were regular but I didn't like being on call at short notice. for my own wellbeing I had to make sure I got out and about during the daylight hours though. I take my hat off to her, don't think I could deal with perinatal care. She a long and fulfilling career ahead of her with many opportunities. I am used to dealing with pregnant women, however, my diagnosis and prescribing goes as far as treating uti and nausea in pregnacy and not beyond, as obstetrics and gynae is a speciality in itself. I have just come in from work and I have seen about 15 children today, and about 30 adults, ages from around 10 days up to 100 years. Respiratory upper and lower viral and bacterial illness which have been a mixture of croup, bronchilitis, pneumonia, asthma, uti and colds mixed in with all the adults with copd, asthma, pneumonia, viral illness and a host of other presenations. Then just as I was leaving the unit as we had shut, someone tried to smash the door in from outside, that a normal evening for me at work. They usually kick off inside. Bit frazzled, I have just sat down with a cup of tea and toast. Off for a day or two now. 👍

ph5172
I have worked a number of patterns. I don’t mind night shifts. The worse pattern was probably 10am - 10pm. With a commute either side it meant you couldn’t do anything productive before and when getting back everyone was in bed and you would join them to get straight back up again to do the same the following day. It was also hard work organising 2 half decent meals to eat during that time. it was also awful for seeing family or friends and if it wasn’t followed by a few days off I would not have stuck it as a permanent pattern
