Exactly. Some habits are good. I won't bother checking the gun when I take it out of the slip as it was empty when I put it in..............well, I thought it was. I have seen this advice several times on car owners Facebook groups. If there is a broken down car, the slow lane is is where it is likely to be. At 70 mph you are going to come upon it incredibly quickly The evidence of fatalities on smart motorways bears out that this is not bad advice. Ah, smart motorways? The sphincters who dreamed that up ought, IMHO to be made to litter pick them? Idiotic idea in the extreme?

My Grandson has just bought his dream car, a BMW. You can tell he has not had it long.... ... he still indicates and stops at red lights ! 😂

You see people sitting in the middle lane when the inside is empty doing 60-65, all they are doing in effect is reducing the 3 lane motorway down to a 2 lane motorway, you can now be prosecuted for sitting in the middle lane. If you are overtaking, you should return to the left lane when it is safe to do so (see also Rules 267 and 268). Be aware of emergency services, traffic officers, recovery workers and other people or vehicles stopped on the hard shoulder or in an emergency area. If you are driving in the left lane, and it is safe to do so, you should move into the adjacent lane to create more space between your vehicle and the people and stopped vehicles. They must have known it would cost lives, nobody could be stupid enough not to realise that it would. It appears they (whoever 'they' are) felt it was a price worth paying. Very callous way of upgrading a motorway.

The problems with 'Smart' motorways, is the not so smart motorists using them. Tin hat at the ready !

A lot of dual carriageways still have verges even if they are soft they are better than nothing . However, two wrongs don't make a right in this respect. Also, dual carriageways weren't always 70 mph. National speed limit was always 60 until they fudged it by changing the rules

A couple of weeks ago on the A30 in Cornwall ( virtually a motorway in all but name) I was doing about 70 when I was overtaken by a car towing a big caravan. It must have been doing over 80.
