yickdaz
Had a look round Thursday at the only 2 rape fields that we can shoot and they are over 20 miles away a few here a few there nothin worth going back for did find birds going on a stubble turnip field it was 1.30pm and raining so thought it would be to late to set up and get wet in the process decided I'd go back today sat, got there at 10.30am immediately i saw birds buffeting in to it on the wind didn't waste any time and got set up by 11am I had a great 1st hr shot 30 it was one of those rare occasions after the first shot over the decoys they flared at you into the wind instead of straight back with the wind so gave me another chance to get one at times birds were dropping short of my position after a shot they got up and came straight at the decoys how often does that happen i had around 6 left and rights doing this then it slowed to a drip next 2 hrs shot 12 I nearly packed up twice then a group of birds came straight in, it happened again so it kept me out there until it was obvious nothing else was going to, had a chance at 2 mallard that happened to fly over in range dropped the 1st one the 2nd just stalled on the wind right above me so put the muzzles on its head pulled the trigger and down that came, it was hard work carrying gear and dead birds back to the car 3 trips very wet and windy but was it worth it yes it was picked 40 and the 2 mallard before anyone asks I was using hull 32g steel 4s for the pigeons so the ducks were shot with those

marsh man
You deserve everything you got today , not a day out for wimps and a good enough reason that I and one or two other members watch the weather unfold from the comfort of there house . How many time have we waited for ages and just when you were on the verge calling it a day when a Pigeon come in and give you a shot , then the same thing happen a bit later , and again a bit later until you have ended up doing a full session ,

kitchrat
Good stuff! For a change, I was a Gun on a small friendly shoot where the farmer had gifted me a day for shooting all his pigeons. To say it was challenging would be an understatement! Standing out there, gale force wind on face with heavy rain, feet glued to the field with contact glue Essex clay. Pheasants coming down wind at Mach 2. Missed a few but also hit a few. In spite of the weather a good time was had by all. Saw a big flock of pigeons on his rape, so going to hit them on Monday, when I've dried out! I have a feeling they will just go elsewhere but that's winter rape shooting for you! I have a feeling they will just go elsewhere but that's winter rape shooting for you! One of the perks when you are on the same wavelength as the landowner and it was nice you got an invite , decent Pigeon shots can normally handle the average Pheasant , note I said average , in my younger days I could shoot pretty straight and a average Pheasant was a lot bigger than a flighting Pigeon so I didn't think they were that difficult , that was until I got an invite on what is normally a average game shoot , the invite was to clear some birds up at the backend of the season , the day was in late January and blowing a gale , we haven't got many hills , more of a slope than a hill , anyhow , they were putting these birds up in the game cover that was in the middle of the field , the birds knew how to survive and when one got up you thought it was going towards number one gun and seconds later it was going on the outside of number 8 , I honestly did not have a clue how much lead to give them , how much lead to give them when they were going sideways and so on , the odd ones I hit was by pure luck as I couldn't hit two on the trot , these birds really put me in my place and from that day I have never said Pheasants are easy . Glad you had a good day MM
Wilts#Dave
Cracking stuff Daz, well done mate 👍🏼I’ve not pulled the trigger since October, but 40 during the winter months is like shooting 100 during high season! Those duck will make good eating too.
