What is a hero?

A selfless person who acts above and beyond the call of duty. Whether that be a soldier in the battlefield or someone's mum (as mentioned previously in this thread) who puts three kids wants and needs before her own.

My hero's? Can't think of any at the moment, but i've read enough WWII books to know everyone of them is a hero in his own right. I guess they come in many different guises.

Where do I start ?

World leaders:-

Winston Churchhill, an intelligent brave & witty bloke. He didn`t just talk a good fight, as young man he was quiet capable of partaking in one.

Queen Elizabeth 1st, defeated the Catholic church (Spain) & saw off the French because of this. This led to the start of Empire which brought England then Britain to the fore.

Queen Elizabeth II, she has ruled over this country with a class that very few of our politicians have managed to show for god knows how many years.

Military leaders:-

The Duke Of Wellington, learnt his trade the hard way in India (if his brother had`nt been the Viceroy he probably wouldn`t have been given the chance to learn from his mistakes), went on to defeat the undeafatable (the French army) in numerous battles. Twice Primeminister of of Britain.

Field Marshal Montgomery, we were dead & buried till this man was given the rains in North Africa, often critiscised for being to cautious in some quarters but in my mind the lives of the blokes he was in charge of weren`t his to throw away & he knew this.

Julius Ceasar, did what nobody else had managed at that time, subjugating Gaul & destroying all his enemies that he faced in the field (although not in the Senate).

General Patton, the opposite of Monty, aggressive, petulant, but always seeking out the enemies weaknesses.

Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, I`ve read this mans autobiography, even as a junior commander this man was capable of exploiting the enemies weaknesses. A military genius.

Sportsmen & Women:-

Boxers

Muhamed Ali, the self titled "Greatest", but never believed his own hype unlike some of the more recent modern fighters who had big ego`s to go with their big mouths. For me the greatest sportsman that has ever lived.

Evander Holyield, Greatest of the recent heavyweights, tough resilient, quick & never knew when he was beaten.

Marvin Hagler, a warrior, brutal cunning & an excellent boxer with a chin like granite.

Roberto Duran, hands of stone would have walked through Mayweather or Hatton at lightweight . He was quick, vicious, great technician, with an excellent boxing brain.

Nigel Benn, I believe this man may well of been our greatest British fighter with only Joe Calzaghe coming close to his level(that would have been a fight). Benn was knocked out by Eubanks but came back a better fighter, took on the Americans in their own backyard & beat them. Not the greatest technician but used what he had to great effect.

Footballers

Bobby Moore, led England to World Cup victory, enough said.

Paul Gascoigne, never played enough due to injuries, but one player who when he put that England shirt you knew was going to give 110% & was always capable of the extraordinary, shame he wasn`t mentally resillient.

Kenny Dalglish, possibly the greatest striker to pull on the Liverpool jersey (I`ve a feeling that a certain Torres might be pushing for that accolade if he stays at Liverpool long enough).

Steven Gerrard, best all round midfielder to come out of the Premiership.

Lots there I know, but couldn`t pick one out. These are the people that stand out for me, people that I believe have gone that little bit further.
