Will Beasley
I'm just about to leave for the first go on 2008 downed Barley. Found two fields of very advanced 6 row last night and the Pigeons were all over it. Hopefully this will be the "start of the season". :good:

Harnser
It wont be long now just noticed today that a couple of fields of barley are turning to the milky stage .Pigeons will soon be looking to drop onto any laid parts of the field . My farmer friend is forcasting an early harvest this year proberbly the first or second week into july . Not sure yet if the rape or the barley will be first . The rape stubble is fabulous for decoying ,but it dosent last long as the seed on the ground self propergates very quickly . I tend to spend as much time as possible on the rape stubble at the beginning of the stubble shooting and leave the cereal stubbles till a bit later on as they last for much longer . Harnser . Cranfield
I am also watching some cereals, waiting for a nice storm to flatten a few bits. It seems very advanced this year. The big problem with stubble shooting round here in the last few years, is that the stubble is not left very long. Very soon there will be ploughs following the combines. This is a mainly due to a lot of Farmers using Contractors and these are busy chappies who need to get the job finished and move on quickly. They often disc and plough through the night. Catamong
They're still on the Spring Rape around here, none of the barley is that far advanced. Cat.
Highlander
Round here the barleys getting there so it's just a matter of time before some gets hammered. At the moment we're on peas (some of which have really got hammered in recent rains) and clover.

The field I'm on about has a track running through the middle that is well used. Unfortunately the dropped barley is fairly close either side of the path and there's no cover to put a hide against. Also it's close enough to the track to stop me sticking anything up inside the field.
Sundowner
just been watching up to 50 skyrats landing in laid barley, at the most a 10 square yard laid bit and another much smaller one right next to it, they kept coming in but also used the next field. Gotta do somthing about it :rolleyees: Edited June 25, 2008 by Sundowner
Pedro
I went for a mooch for a couple of hours this afternoon and found a field of flattened barley. Didn't have any decoy stuff with me, but managed 25 just sitting in a couple of hedges under the flight line. Unfortunately I lost 10 in standing wheat and the bit of barley that was still up. Someone was having a great time about a mile away and was going good guns for the couple of hours I was out I saw the farmer on the way back and he's OK'd it for me to shoot on Sundays and to take the boy shooting too, (get him off the bloody Xbox ), so a top afternoon all round Hopefully more of the same tomorrow afternoon - bloody nights at the mo P. Topgunners
Went out yesterday and clocked a couple of farms with nearly 1,000 birds dropping into 8 or 10 holes in 2 fields and 8 mile up the road 300-400 mixed, pigeons and blackies dropping into the same hole. Busy week-end me thinks. Just bought another 2,000 cartridges. (ouch) getting to be a very dear game nowadays. Pedro
Likewise, again just mooching with the aim of going out on Tuesday with a mate to do some decoying. I took the .20 bore out 'cos I was going to be doing a fair bit of walking. First bird was a great shot and that really got the confidence up Sadly it all went down hill from there - I couldn't hit a flippin barn door The main problem ones being straight towards me Ended up with 5 brought home 4 lost and four hit, but they just carried on regardless, (definite hits from the amount of feathers that came out). I'll be taking the .12 bore out on Tuesday The day wasn't a complete waste though, every time I go out I can see which flight lines they're using and which sitty trees depending on the wind direction, (slightly different today). Roll on Tuesday P.
mossy835
the ones that come straight at me are the easy ones, take the 12 gauge next time.
Catamong
Pedro, Take a tip from me.... Borrow a Trafpol Volvo...........get yourself on the hard shoulder of the Northbound M11 just above Loughton about 2 miles south of the dreaded M25, hop down the bank and set up a rotary on the laid barley field there, you'll have a bonanza, guaranteed,............just watch out for SO19..!!
