myzeneye
some one asked me today why people dont eat fox ? i couldnt really answer other than the fact that they were a bit like dogs/cats, which we, well at least round my way, dont eat... i know its slightly even a tabboo thing to ask, but i really didnt know why ... i told him id never seen hugh fernley whitttjejwhgwehgklh eating one, and he will eat anything !!! there must be plenty of meat on their legs too...? dont get me wrong, im not about to try it, but it did make me wonder why

myzeneye
strange... ive never heard anyone mention eating fox.... they are the first two recipies ive ever seen... i was thinking about it before and would the fact that they are a carnivore make their meat unpleasant ? after all, most things we eat are veggies.... has anyone on here ever eaten it ? is the fact that they are utterly despised by so many a factor in their avoidance from the pot ? like i said, im suprised not to have seen it on the table at river cottage

triscrx
It's not generally known that the Thais eat a lot of fox. It's the closest thing that Chinese, Thais and Malays can legally get to dog. In fact, Manchester -- where Andrew was trying to take Margaret Beckett for dinner -- is one of the prime markets for selling shot fox to Thais. Maybe there is a market selling fox to the local takeaways then

scout
Must admit I tried it about 15 years ago, from what I remember it wasn't great, and I must say I haven't had it since so reading between the lines I didn't like it. IT was just spit roasted over a fire so there are probably better ways to cook it but I don't think I'll be trying it again.

Bleeh
From what I've been told, the meat isn't very good. It's something about them being a predator, and for the same reason why no-one eats predators in the first place...
Highlander
Guess it just goes to show that you can pretty much eat any meat if you choose BUT why would you!
njc110381
All I will add to this is that nobody does eat it, there must be a reason. That said, the rich eat caviar, and that tastes awful IMO. Maybe one day when I'm really bored I may try it, there isn't much I don't like (apart from anything I shoot, which is annoying!). Axe
Perhaps thats why Clarissa suggestes hanging it in running water for 3 days, prior to cooking it. Just the thought of it is making me sick.

Lloyd90
Alot of what people eat from shooting is game, fox isnt game its a pest (Varmint) Eating game is very nice although I doubt many people eat varmint. Breastman
The first thing i always want to know before eating something is "What did IT feed on?" (you are what you eat and hence it is what it eats). And as these dirty b@stards eat road kill, rotten carcasses, household waste and just about any other waste product going, i wouldn't eat one if i was paid, just them same as crow/corvids etc. :yp: Of course for a drunken bet . . . . Hammergun
Fox has never really been eaten in European cultures, as is the case with all predators and scavengers. This is because it is considered an unclean beast under the Laws of Moses in the Book of Leviticus.
