 Driving back home from whitby area yesterday we were on a country lane just outside of Pickering. We were doing about 45mph on a national speed limit road so hardly speeding due to wet and snotty roads.

Suddenly from the trees a group of pheasant decided to play 'chicken' in front of the van. 2 made it and 2 didn't. One smacked the front bumper so hard it has snapped the side connecting bracket so the bumper now moves and drops about an inch. The second took flight at the last minute and smashed into the edge of the grill and headlight getting it's head stuck fast under the bonnet. The bang was so loud we both thought it must have been a dog or something bigger. We pulled over to find the one below stuck fast under the bonnet hood and the headlight pushed back a bit and the edge of the grill all cracked. A passing farmer stopped alongside us as we had the hazard lights on and just laughed like chuff. Then proceeded to tell us the pheasants were a pain in the **** round there for doing that.

Anyway, I am now left with a damaged bumper, cracked front grill and a snapped bracket to the rear of the headlight. I hope the dogs appreciate the meat considering it is going to be one of the most expensive meals they ever have.

i hired a luton type van when i moved house a few years ago. whilst driving along the A1 a pheasant flew across us and straight into the van. there was a big puff of feathers and i though that was the end of it.

Well, when we got home i stopped to look at the damage and there it was - wedged in between the box and cab. i went to pull it out thinking it was obviously a gonner but once i had it free the bird flew off!!!

i had to change my pants

Looks like a set up to me, you would at least have a broken headlight.

Fancy killing a pheasant with a car, that is worse than an air rifle.

Not a set up at all.

You need to climb down out of that dubious tree you are sat in MC.

We had to use the van on it as I forgot the air rifle or catapult.

Should have asked him permission to shoot them regularly

I had a similar experience that sticks in my mind a few years ago. I've hit Pheasants a few times but this one really was funny.

I was driving my Defender at around 50mph along a fairly big road with woods either side. There are Deer there so I always keep my speed down a bit just in case I spot one. A Pheasant flew up from the trees and hit the top corner of my wing. It bounced off of the wing, round the side of the landy and hit the door mirror. What I don't get is the mirror arm then sprung against the side of the door, trapping the bird between the mirror and the passenger window! Anyone who drives a Defender will know the mirror springs are like Bear traps and are much stronger than they need to be, but I have no idea how the bird managed to get behind the mirror when it sprung aganst the truck? I didn't stop until I got home. I thought I'd have a good meal out of it but when I pulled it out at home it was completely trashed!

They do make a mess sometimes. My dad hit one in a Fiesta once and its beak went through his radiator ;)

I was riding along the sea front a last summer on one of the few hot days we had, with my jacket open about half way and ended up getting a low flying sparrow stuck inside it. That was rather scary, as it was flapping about in my jacket. As soon as stopped and opened it fully it flew off.

I had a pheasant fly up out of the hedgerow and smack into me while I was riding my motorbike in a somewhat "spirited" manner a few years ago.

It hit me just below my left armpit and I have absolutely no idea where it went next as I was more focussed on staying upright and alive. I did glance back but couldn't see anything, and I do tend to move on and continue to concentrate once any danger is passed.
