Blackbart
I was talking to a pal the other day who had been on a shoot near here and was amazed to hear that not only did they not get near the expected bag but they were charged £22+vat on every pigeon that was shot during the day !! Has anybody else heard of similar ?
Dunkield
No, they are free on the shoot I beat on, but they prefer it if they aren't shot until after the first flush of pheasants or partridges have been over.
bushtrekker
Yes, on 1st April
Baldrick
Sounds like your pal was fleeced: no shoot captain I have met would dream of charging for pigeons shot.
Blackbart
They were charged as a pheasant and 8 were shot in total !
shot shot
I thnk he should get his eyes checked **he should have gone to spec savers**
Mungler
Nah that's a wind up. Being charged for shooting vermin? As Stuart said we can't shoot vermin until the first sighting of a game bird. You can do fivers in for 1st and last last pigeon of the day (or fox etc). But a charge for shooting a pigeon - on your bike.
Blackbart
I thnk he should get his eyes checked **he should have gone to spec savers** The birds were braced at the end of the day,it was no mistake..they were charged per bird.Supposed to be 150 bird day and ended up with 88(including the pigeon)
happyhunt
this does happen, I know of one driven pheasent shoot in the northwest which charges £25 + vat for everything that hits the ground and is picked up , once the keeper even borrowed a shotgun off one of the guns to shoot a squirrel which was then added to the bag......................nooooooooooooo need for it. jonevo
tell them to shove it I would charge them for my time and expenses cheeky ******
kdubya
my syndicate charges guests an amount based on the total of birds down, be it phesant, partridge, duck, snipe, pigeon whatever, it works thus £40 basic charge £1 for every bird so if 80 birds down total cost is £120. cheers KW
Ninj
Just out of interest, which shoot was this? Northumberland presumably??
the_commoner
think they would normally be classed as 'sundries' and as such not charged for, sounds a bit of a odd one to me, i know that i for sure would not have paid

scolopax
Never been on a formal (paid) driven day but wonder what position you would be in legally if you just flatly refused to pay for the pigeon or various for matter?? Pay for the game at the agreed rate, tip the 'keeper as normal and just walk away, what are they going to do??
Dunkield
The 'terms and conditions' if you like of the day should be spelled out clearly at the point of booking, if not they should be included in the welcome and safety chat before the day starts. I have done that many driven days, but even our walk and stand days start with what you can and can't shoot speach by the head keeper. If it isn't mentioned in either of those I would say you have the right to be a bit miffed.
Bleeh
We only ever charge if a pigeon is the first bird that is shot on a drive, as a fine because it's not allowed (along with any other non-gamebird). This is because it's bloody annoying when a bored gun starts bashing away on a pigeon and scares the intire drive before it's started
Cushat
tip the 'keeper as normal I wouldn't tip any keeper who charged me £22/bird for shooting pigeons. A fine on shooting pigeons before the first game bird is out isn't a bad idea though. The number of drives I've seen where guns start popping away at stupidly high pigeons before the drive has started properly and all the partridge dissappear out of the back
EMT
I have seen this happen on a few commercial shoots that I have been on. Luckily I was not paying for the day and I also didn't shoot the pigeon either. I think worse than this is when one of the beaters dogs pegs a bird or two and they then get put in the game cart and count towards the total. I was talking to one of the beaters today who beats on a few commercial shoots and his dog pegged 5 pheasants that were all put in the game cart at £30 + VAT a bird. adymorris
Shocking - that would be the last time I went on that shoot
haggis
I wish I could find somewhere to shoot pigeons
