BSA-airgunner
i think you get better advice from here as the opinions are from shooters and not from some one paid to do the write ups

Stamford
I also bought the same magazine and totally agree that a 2 page spread was ****....... I do tend to buy the odd mag now and again but read half of before I leave the shop to make sure its worth it
Mungler
Most of these mags are just good "bog reading". They are full of so called "articles" that are nothing more than adverts (advertorials). The best place for advice (and plenty of daftness that will make you smile) is actually on here.
MC
W H Smiths is the place for magazines, I get SHooting Times delivered every week but that is more out of habit than anything else. Although it is probably the best shooting mag out there. As mungler says all the others are all full of the same adverts and articles advertising goods, just cartridges is the most obvious. They are full of so called "articles" that are nothing more than adverts (advertorials). The best place for advice (and plenty of daftness that will make you smile) is actually on here. Yep.... we cover, a bit of shooting, golf, booze, pics of dead animals and birds, dogs, dogging, pigeon shooting equipment, loss of masculinity, fishing, general SarfEast gayness, the odd advert (and some are really odd!) clothing including waterproof jackets and thongs, legal advice from mostly non-lawyers, recipes and immigration strategies that given the right rituals could raise Adolf from the grave! What more do you want?

White Rabbit
W H Smiths is the place for magazines, I get SHooting Times delivered every week but that is more out of habit than anything else. Although it is probably the best shooting mag out there. As mungler says all the others are all full of the same adverts and articles advertising goods, just cartridges is the most obvious. Can anyone tell me why a certain magazine pays a so called cartridge expert to plug his own range of cartridges and his company within his own articles? Selling cartridges doesn't make you an expert and the prices he quotes are his prices. Certainly not the prices i pay! Does this get up anyone elses nose or is it just me?! For what its worth i buy Shooting Gazette and Whsmiths Fieldsports magazine which is quarterly. Both are expensive but have original and well written articles and good photography. The other monthlys are just rehashed rubbish. I know newbies have to be catered for but no effort is put in. I once read an article by Mark Russel of Grimsthorpe which basically said when its wet practise shooting in your shooting coat! I don't need to spend 3 quid to be told that! bobt
I used to buy sporting gun and shooting times, but once I had a years worth, I noticed the following year it was basically the same article.
Tobyb525
I am subscribed to it - now i wish I had got a more SPORTING and more GUN type magazine every month! Edited June 24, 2009 by Tobyb525
Rockers
I have stopped buying mags as I find they generally repeat the same article every 4 months, albeit with different pics/ author. thank god they are not as bad as carp mags which the latest bait every 3 words and are generally written by full time anglers with time on their side. As many have mentioned before forums provide more insight and unbiased advice and it is a dam lot cheaper.
Toombsy
Hi all, well here goes i need to rant.Im not one for buying shooting mags mainly because like most i have to watch the pennies.but this month i saw one(which will remain nameless)that on the cover read "get ready for the pigeons we test the latest deeks, rotary and camo.So i decided to treat myself(sad isnt it).I was so pi**ed of to find the pages re the title they were nothing more than a few articles telling us what is available there was no test at all no pros or cons for any items. Funny you should say that... I was going to post exactly the same thing a couple of days ago but never got round to it Not only was that 'special' pigeon shooting feature a complete con and basically a vehicle to please the advertisers... but on the cover it plugged 10 top tips for rabbit shooting.... the journalist who put that little strip together ought to be strung up. They weren't tips at all... same old tips were were taught as kids. Not a patch on Robin Scott's Sporting Gun
Guest topshot_2k
i buy both sporting gun and sporting shooter, i like them, they pass the time when i cant be out shooting and do have some good info in them. I wouldnt buy anything based on their reviews but nor would i based on people views on here. It does annoy me that justcartridges get to do the cartridge info section as years ago it used to be really accurate and informative, now its just plugging what he stocks
John_R
I settled on Sporting Gun as a regular read. I sometimes get Gun Mart, but if I buy it too often I end up wondering why. If you read too many of them you end up looking at the same stuff over and over again. Same goes for the two airgun mags, there is not much point in getting both. Fuji Shooter
I read Clay Shooting on a monthly basis although I must admit I wouldn't miss it if I forgot to buy it. The one thing I find totally strange is some of the gun shop adverts listing new and second hand guns all saying POA. Why bother advertising at all if I still have to ring you up for a price or look on GT

Vince Green
Its always been the same and its not restricted to shooting mags. Car and bike mags are worse in my opinion. The best shooting magazine overall was Guns Review, brilliant quality articles buy alas it folded about ten years ago.

Sauer
i get shooting times - subscribed and i buy sporting rifle and like it i find magazines work for me.. i work away form home and often without net access and in foreign climes with next to **** all to do so i find if i "save-up" the mags and try not to read em then take em with me when i go it usually helps big time. also after i finished reading em my colleagues often looking for summit in english langauge to read ive had one colleague take up clay shooting since reading my mags and he or any of his family had no connection with shooting previous. apparently he went home tried it out at a clay ground went home told his wife he was apllying for a shotgun cert. her face was meant to have been a picture ( she goes with him now and has her own 20 bore ) sauer
ferretmanabu
I've never read a bad review of a gun in gun magazines, even reviews of the cheap SMK air rifles. Apparently they have superby accuracy and are a delight to handle. This to me suggests questionable credibility. Stopped buying them years ago. White Rabbit
This really is my pet hate!! Most of the shooting mags churn out the same old dross month after month and get away with it. Imagine the shooting and freebies this lot manage to brag! Makes me sick! If consumers stopped buying them perhaps they'd get a rollicking off the owners and start putting some efffort in! Afew suggestions 1. Why not take a gun along to afew clubs and let real people make some suggestions and actually be more critical of a gun rather than just stating the obvious. 2. How about some interviews with some of the top shots. What they use and what technique they prefer? 3. Visit some of the large sporting estates. Interview the staff and owners and find out about how they run their individual shoot. Agents etc. 4. Cartridges tests that mean something rather than plug the authors company! Interview the manufacturers and find out more about the decisions they make regarding what they load and how they percieve the market. Tour the factory and the history of the company etc. 5. Gunmakers. Interviews and factory tours. 6. History of the sport. How it has evolved over the years. Interview the big decision makers. I could go on and on!! We have a great sport covering a huge range of topics yet this lot can't be bothered and are reduced to making false claims on their cover just to get people to buy. I find it annnoying! Does anyone else agree? The lack of imagination is unbelieveble.
