Browning
Pity our government couldn't think of anything better on which to spend the colossal amount of money it will cost.......
Pike
Fantastic news for me because I'm on my way up to Trafalgar square on the pull! Shame the government have spent loads of time and heaps of cash on the bid rather than sorting out the colosal mess that is this country. As I only live a stones throw from Stratford that is definatley my cue to get the hell out of here before 2012!! Pike B)
Big Dog
Browing I agree - don't get me wrong, I support sport but I also work as the Director of a YMCA dealing with all kind of anti-social behaviour and social health proplems among 13-19 yr olds. We are struggling for money to keep our programme afloat. Kids and drugging and drinking themselves into ill health, We got turned down a few hundren ££ we were depending on to get kids off the street here and take them camping. I spend 90% of my time chasing money. What I could do with the dust that fall off that amount of money!! never mind the money its self. Paul in North Lincs.
I totally agree with you BD........ I do enjoy sports, and will propbably watch the games from my TV like 99% of the population. I really don't two Sh*ts about where the games are held, and feel that perhaps there are much more pressing issues that need to be tackled first, closer to home. yes.........a few jobs may be created in building a stadium yes.........yes, we will recieve a few thousand visitors from all over the world. yes......... It looks good on an economic level, especially from an inward investment point of view...... .............so what??B)?? ()
Cranfield
Oh dear, Oh dear, Oh dear. I think winning the Olympics is just about to cost us a lot of money and for what ? We should have let France win and they could have gone bankrupt. B) I to love Sports, but this has got "Millennium Dome" written all over it. Loads of upheaval, some short term jobs, disruption of everyday life for a lot of people, buildings we don't want, backhanders everywhere and all paid for by the British Taxpayer. Meanwhile, Hospitals remain dirty, the Police are undermanned, OAP's go short of cash, Schools are in the dumps, etc., etc., Why can't there be a permanent facility, say in Greece and all the competing Countries contribute toward the costs, per Games. Fisherman Mike
What a bunch of Kill Joys... The Kudos and Revinue to be generated by the first games here since 48 is immeasurable.... Ok we are all chasing funding for this and that and the other and more money for research and health et al, et al. BUT........... You cant stand still and be overtaken by nations like Greece, France, Italy............ If they can do it and make a success of it so can we.. The biggest failing of us BRITS is our utter negativity. Personally, I Think its brilliant and Hats Off to the Bid Committee, and I hate to say it, to Tony Blair. FM. Cranfield
FM, I appreciate your enthusiasm and it will be shared by many. The Kudos and Revinue to be generated by the first games here since 45 is immeasurable.... Almost no revenue generated will find its way back into the Public Purse. I think OAP's would prefer money to Kudos. Ok we are all chasing funding for this and that and the other and more money for research and health et al, et al. BUT........... You cant stand still and be overtaken by nations like Greece, France, Italy............ If they can do it and make a success of it so can we.. We are in no danger of being overtaken by Greece, France and Italy.... I think you will find that every Country that has hosted the Olympics since the War, has lost a fortune on the exercise. The Sydney Olympics cost Australia 5.9 billion Australian Dollars (approx £2.8 billion). By 2012 it will cost us a lot more than that. God knows we need something to cheer us up, but I'm afraid this doesn't do it for me. Also, the prospect of Princess Tony Bliar mincing all over the TV screens claiming all the credit, is nauseating. jim_whitson
I'm a big humbug about these so-called sports. To me, a sport is only a sport if you don't count the points. Think about it - would you consider someone who asked how many everyone had hit after each drive to be a sportsman? I certainly wouldn't! To me, as soon as you start competing against others, sport becomes competition, and that ruins it. Just my tuppneworth... *puts on asbestos pants*
ernyha
We should have let France win and they could have gone bankrupt. B) But France wouldn't have gone bankrupt would they, they would have done what they always do when in a financial crisis. Milk it from the European funds that we pay into anyway. Just for the record FM, the last time we held the Olympics was in 1948 and as we were bankrupt from the war anyway we had nothing to lose. kdubya
we will probably win the darts and a few other obscure events! only benefit will be the rejuvenation of Londons east end at a tremendous cost to the majority of the british taxpayer who will neither recieve benefit or progression from this useless non cost effective load of tripe, that the british make that cockneys will be the sole benefactors of! cheers KW
Sergeant
By the way i wonder who's going to represent us in the pistol shooting events I was thinking the same thing, apparently they practice in france how are they going to hold the event in this country? Will they un ban handguns or just give them a special dispensation for the day? I look forward to them, ill only be 26, who knows, i might be in them. ernyha
how are they going to hold the event in this country? Will they un ban handguns or just give them a special dispensation for the day? I think this has already happened when we held the Commonwealth games a couple of years ago. The pistol shooting went ahead along with the rifle shooting at Bisley. rjimmer
We have been waiting decades for a new road into Weymouth. Now we are likely to get one, because all the sailing traffic will have to come through the town if the Olympic sailing events are held at Portland. If the money was there all the time, why couldn't the road have been built anyway? The whole issue will just be a gravy train for the people who don't/won't do any productive work and want to play games, or talk about them, all their lives. I was hoping somebody else would be hosting the games! They'll probably hold the sailing at Cowes, now. Our local council can't get right! You are having a larf Mike , can't you remember the monster balls up Mr. Liar and Co. made of getting a round tent put up back in 1999 ?. I wouldn't like to imagine what that fiasco eventually ended up costing us. If they couldn't handle that and organise sensible tied in sponsorship aren't you honestly horrified at the thought of them trying to organise this event with the massive infrastructure implications. I'm dreading having to face the bill for yet another thing I've had no say in deciding on, did any of you get asked if you were in favour of it ?. As for raising revenue a few fat cats will know how to milk the system and get even fatter while the rest of us just cough up and smile. If we managed to "win" this bid despite Mr. Liars involvement I can't help but wonder if the others are now grinning at our misfortune behind their collective hands. Not negativity mate just reality.
