Topgunners Posted May 26, 2015 Report Share Posted May 26, 2015 MEGA 48 hour Bank holiday weekend. Apologies for the extremely long post. (i did abbreviate it) lol Sunday I got up at 4.30am and went to a farm that the farmer had said he had spotted a couple of foxes in his yard.I had put out a bait station the day before and sat 100 yards away. 3 hours later I had seen nothing, so time to move on. I met the lads at another farm about 11.00 am, that we were at last week, where we had noticed around 500-600 rooks and jackies, on a field of freshly cut grass. I spoke to the farmer and he said that unfortunately we couldn't set up in the field as they were still bailing and there was a lot of boggy areas where one of his machines was stuck. So we went to the farm next door and 3 of the lads(Alan, Ag and Lugs) set up on a pasture field under the flight line.I was set up close to the barns. The birds started flighting over the decoys in the field and I could hear the lads banging away almost immediately.I set up with a flapper mounted on the top of some hay bales and decoys all around a huge pile of wood chippings. After a couple of hours the farmer from the other farm came over and asked me could we give him some dead crows to put in his field, as they were attacking the bales and cut grass.We gave him 45 and he went away very grateful. It was non-stop shooting for us up until 4.30 pm, when all of a sudden the wind picked up and the birds just stopped flighting over us. We packed up, and total shot was 274 and picked up 247. Top day and both farmers were very pleased. Monday Up at 4.00 am and I went back to the farm we shot on last week and had 116, as the farmer rang and said hundreds had returned. Upon arrival I lifted about 300 in and around the cattle feed stores.I sat watching for half an hour and set up next to the horse paddock. I shot 14 very quickly and then my buddy Alan arrived and he set up behind the barns in a hedgerow. Over the next hour I shot only 2 more, and Alan never fired a shot. Pick up time!!!! Total 16 corvids and a magpie. On the way to the MEGA FARM, we popped into another farm, drove onto the back field and there is a fox mooching about. BOOM!!!! Fox down. 15 minutes later, another one showed. BOOM! Number 2 down. No more over the next hour, so we moved on. No piccy, as my phone battery had run flat by now. We then drove to another farm with over 300 acres of cut grass fields,and a railway bank all along one edge of the fields. this was a first time drive round for us on this particular farm. This is where we had decided to do a MEGA stint.Arriving about 3.00pm. First off, we had my .17 hmr and Alan had the .22 rimfire. The .223 on the back seat, just in case we saw a daytime fox On the mooch. We proceeded to drive round all of the fields in rotation shooting rabbits in most of them.Stopping to gut the rabbits every 10 we shot. At one stage Alan had just shot 2 rabbits and a minute later a fox shot out of the hedgerow and grabbed one of the rabbits, dropped it and then grabbed the other one. Quick as a flash Alan shot the fox and it flipped into the air and rolled down the railway embankment. The day soon passed and it was just getting dark so we stopped for a bite to eat and set up the rifes with the t67's on. 17 bloody gates in total. Back round the fields stopping and calling as we went. In the second field we had one of the most brilliant sights we had ever seen in all our years of shooting. Coming down the field a set of eyes , and then another, and another, and another. In total 7 foxes all within 30-50 yards of each other. I was trying to pick out the vixen but I think she was the one sat tight in the hedgerow about 250 yards away at the top of the bank.We sat watching the cubs play fighting and playing leap frog with each other, for over haf an hour. Just wish I had got that on film. BRILLIANT. !!!!! We moved on and proceeded to drop rabbits all over the place and then I had 2 foxes in quick succession, and UNBELIEVABLY, we saw another family of 6. This time I got the vixen and then,against my better wishes proceeded to sit it out for a couple of hours and took 4 of the cubs. We shot 51 rabbits and picked up 37 rabbits. Some had twisted and flipped down the embankment, and the others we could not find in the long grass field We finished at 5.30am today, and we were both knackered. What a 48 hour stint that was. Same as branchers imho. I would shoot the cubs first and THEN the vixen. That way they don't starve. Sounds like double standards but it's more humane imo.
