  1. I understand what you mean and i dont mean to teach you to suck eggs but when copper swarf is left to oxidize in a barrel it will cause pitting. regardless of the speed of the round a .17 hmr round has a copper jacket just like most centrefire rounds. however, as you've described that you "clean" yours at least every week or after shooting then at least its getting some oil down the barrel on a regular basis. This of course will inhibit any oxidization before it has a chance to do any damage. I apologize if my posts have caused you any offence as this is not my intention. My only concern is if this young chap leaves his rifle uncleaned for any length of time on someones advice and then finds the barrels are pitted, he will most certainly be royally peeved. I clean my 17 hmr after shooting every time, and have not noticed any change in zero, my .22 gets a patch and nothing more. my 22/250 gets the same treatment as the .17hmr. this cleaning regime was taken on the advice of several friends & gunsmiths who, to be fair, see quite a lot of damaged rifles due to poor cleaning.
  2. Richter are pretty bad mate, after all you get what you pay for. Don't know about JSR but if they're just as cheap then they'll be just as bad too. sorry if this isn't what you want to hear but i'm just trying to save you some pennies and grief. Edgar brothers make a good scope, the OPTI-MATE range are very good for the money, made in japan, fog, shock, and waterproof.
  3. what about the copper deposits oxidizing from the jackets of .17hmr rounds then? this is the stuff that damages the barrel, where as .22 only leaves a lead deposit.
  4. i got caught out with something like this when i put in for a variation on my ticket. my FLO advised me to get some more experience with centrefire before i apply for a larger calibre deer rifle, they may say the same to you. I think the .243 is the smallest calibre allowed for deer, there's some really good advice here about more dedicated calibres so maybe 2 different calibres are the best way to go. .223 is a good calibre to start with for foxing. does anyone know if this calibre can be used on muntjac? if so then you can practice your stalking and get some real experience behind you.
  5. yes i think you do, but you're FLO will advise you and help with the finer points, don't worry, they're here to help. like the gent said, put in for a 1000 to keep and 500 to buy.
  6. Hello mate, 12g is too loud as there's too much gas given off for the moderator to cope with, the 410's are quietest, not sure about 20g but i've heard good things, can you try one out first?
  7. you do need to clean the barrels properly on a .17 because the deposits left by the copper jackets can erode the metal, a rod is much more thorough than a pull thru as you can give it abit more welly.
  8. pigeons classed as vermin not game, so you can shoot them 24/7.
  9. how much?!!!!! got some of those in my local gunshop for £17.95 thats a pull through cleaning kit which are ok but watch you dont damage the threads or it might break in the barrel "mid pull" £ 35 is taking the micheal tho,
  10. i had a lot of trouble getting a patch down a .17 barrel, in the end i bought a .177 air rifle kit with mop and phosphor brush. i've never had to use a nitro remover spray as a good squirt of oil with the brush seems to do the trick. might depend on the ammo tho.
  11. a bale will stop the bullet but you need something fairly solid and flat that the round will mark to see where your bullets are going, a bit of 3/4 ply painted white will suffice and aim for your previous shots.
  12. you're rfd will have to charge vat aswell.
  13. just read on yahoo news, three tramps in russia were arrested in connection with the disappearance of a 25 yr old man when it was revealed they had murdered, butchered, and eaten most of the corpse, they sold the rest of his body parts to a local kebab store..... want some chile sauce with that?
  14. Paddy Galore!

    fuel tank

they do the same sort of stuff for motorcycle tanks, resin based fuel resistant gunk really does work!
  15. Got rid of loads of stuff tho, all my bikes went via e bay raising about £2000. sold our old sofas which were nice looking but seriously uncomfortable for £200. and got rid of 2 really uncomfortable church pews. surprising what people will buy.
  16. picked up a hydraulic bike lift for £50, which should have been £125. got lumbered with a crappy rollcab tool box which fell apart when i loaded it up with tools for £130.
  17. hello chap, he's thinking of steel magnum, you cant use more than half choke with steel. use what you like with lead as its softer and will deform easier in a tight choke. i have heard similar about sg shot damaging barrels when put thru a full choke but who knows, never tried it. maybe someone will add on this thread and let us know...
  18. hello girly! you don't need to worry, you'd still look good in sack cloth! :(
  19. up at five, had a bad dream that the missus crashed the car. not gory/scary, its just that i always seem to get the repair bill!!!
  20. Sorry you had a bad day mate, very windy and wet in norfolk too. inbetween the showers i've been sniping pigeons in the farmers field. THEY'RE SO DUMB!!!!! got about 30 with my 22 before they twigged i was behind my hedge. lucky for me he still hasn't ploughed his field yet cos they do seem to like the stubble.
