  1. I wonder how accurate the figures in the report are and when they were obtained. Renewal times for Essex are over double the quoted figure.
  2. The common thread in previous "gun rampages" appears to be the failure of police to revoke certificates after being informed of holder's unsuitability. HGV/LGV medical assessment didn't stop the Glasgow bin lorry driver committing carnage.
  3. Very full answer from Clayman. Thank you. I, too, was always under the impression that the original purpose of a temp certificate was as you describe. That would not explain how a temp SGC cert allows purchase of cartridges if the purpose is for possesion and not use.
  4. Be a miracle if a tester misses some of the ones I've seen done where the DPF has been totally removed and replaced with a length of pipe. I agree it won't be noticed if the DPF is opened and the innards removed.
  5. Sorry to be a killjoy if an MOT tester notices a removal it is a failure.
  6. Seem to be a version of the Select range. Look at the Beretta copy lock-up.
  7. My SGC runs out soon and I expect to get issued with a temp due to the backlog in Essex. I understand I can't buy a gun on a temp but what's the position regarding selling. I would ask Essex police licensing if I could ever get through on the phone. Thanks
  8. Speed must be restricted to 20mph I understand.
  9. I'm tempted by a mint H38, especially as it's a left-hander. Reviews look good but don't they always. Any first hand opinions would be appreciated; looking to use it for clays, pigeons and some walked up game. Thanks
  10. For anyone running a Fiat, Alfa or the like I have used Clovertech, Dagenham, East London. Good prices and excellent service.
  11. Surely it's shortsighted of the dealer not to inspect and clean the gun. He's responsible for any faults you find after purchase apart from cosmetic. Having said that I purchase a used gun and on inspection in daylight found two small cracks in the stock not noticeable in the artificial shop light. Credit to Essex Gun, he immediately gave me a refund.
  12. I think confusion occurs because of differences regarding temp permits for shotgun and firearms. As David quoted you can't use a temp cert to buy firearms ammunition but you can use it to buy shotgun cartridges. I see from that the OP's response from Essex Police was wrong if he was told he could not buy shotgun cartridges on a temp. permit..
  13. Traditionally oil were either mineral based or vegetable based. Very few oils now are vegetable based except classic car/motorbike oils. A mineral based oil can be multigrade like 0w30 for example or a single grade such as SAE30.
  14. Good advice from Neil82 if you want to risk having an insurance claim refused. If the DPF is removed/tampered with the car no longer meets manufacturer's standard and insurance is void. Not easy to refit the DPF when the car has been towed to the repairer after an accident. I've been using DPF cleaner on a routine basis every 2,000 or so miles and the DPF light has never come on despite lots of short journeys.
  15. I found a chart on Nigel Teague's website which gives The Winchester (Winchoke/Invector) bore as ) 0.735in cylinder and Browning Invector as 0.727in cyl. By my reckoning a Browning invector cylinder choke would give about 1/4 choke if fitted to the 101. Teague do sell invector chokes sized for Winchester.
  16. I have a 101 - very similar but an earlier model. Great, well balanced and I much prefer it to my 325 grade 5. Downside, i'm told, is no spares availability in this country so something to bear in mind. Chokes are listed from Nigel Teague. I paid £550 last year from a home based dealer for mine - a 101 XTR lightweight, multichoke Guntrader normally has a selection to get an idea of price. Good luck and enjoy.
  17. I had a similar experience in Essex. Took the remains of an old .410 into local police station for disposal. Counter assistant took the gun and printed off a form for me to sign giving up ownership. I showed my certificate to prove I was entitled to have the gun and was politely told " Certificates are nothing to do with me". I asked for a receipt with the gun's serial number and was refused but was given a compliment slip with a lost property receipt number on it. On getting home I phoned Firearms licensing and was asked to email details of the event which I did. Several months later I received a phone call saying a shotgun registered to me was handed in a police station and why hadn't I notified them of the loss. Luckily I still had the compliments slip and email copy. "Sorry, our mistake" was the reply!

  19. The seats will only go flat if you remove the seat base which just lifts/pulls up and out. Then the seat backs lay flat to put a dog box on top. Alternatively, as suggested, remove the backs as well - just remember which way the brackets go and where you put the bolts for safe keeping. The only downside I found with my Jimny was the lack of space and high fuel consumption for it's size - expect low to mid 30s. Brilliant off road even with standard tyres as it's so light it doesn't get bogged down.
  20. I believe your engine is produced by Fiat so a good place to look is on Fiat/Alfa Romeo forums. FiatForum.com is a wealth of information. You may be right about re-piping cooling water because exhaust gas recirculation causes lower combustion temperatures. Whilst reducing nitrous oxide emissions the lower temp is less efficient. NOx level is not measured during MOT.
  21. Have never done it but I understand you may need to have the ECU re-calibrated to stop management light problems. If you alter the ECU it is notifiable to insurance and they may not accept it because the car will no longer conform with manufacturer's emissions. Plenty of people seem to blank EGRs but it could invalidate insurance - the choice is yours.
  22. Catalytic converters create a lot of heat and can start fires in dry grass. Also watch out for amorous people laying down!
  23. Thanks everyone for the replies. I have decided to take the plunge and have put a deposit on the Forester. Pick it up later in the week. Incidentally, I sold my Zafira to "Webuyanycar.com" as they their offer after deducting their admin charge was only £500 less than my local Vauxhall dealer is selling them at the same age.
