Buying an Air rifle moderator (a recent experience)
Dougy replied to TaxiDriver's topic in General Shooting Matters
Sorry but i wouldnt give him the drippings off my nose, let alone £40. Simples, Oh ! and just to add he would have known why mickmep. a Mod for an air rifle is not a fire arm or part of, so not relevent. I can understand if the purchaser's Air Rifle was on ticket ie; fac but there is no mention in the post so i "assume" it was not. -
Rather him than me, I dont like it when a chap i go Fox shooting with comes along with his 222 and no mod. I lamp and wear the defenders, poor old Sid's going to be deaf pretty soon at that rate. As for the back stop, i dont know about anyone else, but i cant see much past the muzzle either so how can i possibly comment. I am sure your knowledge of the land, and common sense did not put anyone or thing in danger. .

Zeff get yourself to Catton rifle shoot at the end of this month, i will take my 30.06 and you can have a few shots down range. There will no doubt be other folk there that may let you have a look or go with there gear. I think there may be a simulated running boar target aswell

What happens is this Stu, All the pigs that get shot with your 6.5's lie down for a bit while you have you picture taken with them, then--------------- this is the good bit, they wink at each other  have a peep round to see who's looking, then run back into the woods for a giggle

A double only gives you 2 shots, so, say you get 1/2 a dozen Boar running past at a fair pace and pretty close you take your 2 shots, thats it gun empty ( yes i know you can chuck 2 more in) Its at that moment you get the biggest Boar in the world coming right behind the 6 that you've just shot at,and its overtaking all the others, all you can do is watch it fly past through your scope. Or you can get a decent bolt action that you get used to, by use,, and rattle off shots at all but 2 of the flying pigs. Ive tried cycling a Sauer 202 but it was to me slower than my old Browning maybe it was a stiffy due to being new, i dont know, but i wouldn't buy one i thought it would have been smoother and quicker. My choice a bolt action with capabilities for a larger mag

I know its hard to forget such a beast Tell you what i bet there wouldnt be much difference between that rifle of mine and a semi-auto Poor miffy never had a chance of a shot on them piggies. Yes there area few of the special snow rounds left, i will take some solid gold tipped ones this year, it may tempt the beaters to venture into the woods to pick the pigs up. Are you going this year , I'm taking some HP sauce and Marmite.

It was something simalar that ruined the pike fishing in Ireland,15-20 years ago There used to be loads of fishermen from Germany going over there just for the pike. They would even take refrigerated vans for the catch. Take them back and sell them to pay for there holiday + profit. So its nothing new.

Well i didnt know that I have to agree about the bolt action, i had a conversation with regards to a double not too long ago and i could not agree that this chap could get more shots off with his double than i could with my 30.06. In the end we agreed to disagree. In a nice kind of way Whats the "E100" reg

Get yourself something that will do for other quarry like deer if your going for a variation. A calibre for Boar alone will limit you, and you have the issue with regards to amunition availability The most popular are 25.06 - 6.5x55 - 308 - 30.06 or anything simalar will all do the job. There is also the issue with regards the use of military calibres being used in some of the countries involved in the last war, allthough i heard they are looking into lifting that restriction, but when nobody is sure, even if My calibre of choice was a 30.06

Thanks chaps I keep on wondering though why i came to miss one at 150 yds when i clearly made contact with a Coke tin at the same distance. Strange I am waiting for a call from someone regarding a dead Fox in one of there fields That Sako has been good for the longer shots

Looks nice. Your the 1st one I've seen with a sonic. I have one on my 250 and must say I'm happy with it.

Popped out on Thursday night after a farmer had complained about loosing a couple of lambs to a Fox,it had been seen on the lambs moments after being born. (not that they really want to live after being born anyway) They may have been born dead, (Its not been very good for the lambs this year)..If not the Fox would soon make that decision. We had been out Wednesday and seen one out at around 300+yds but it wasnt hanging around,it ran behind some digging from the ditches and dissapeared for a few minutes then appeared again shortly after 50yds further down the field. This one wasnt playing and to be honest it was that cold we decided to call it a night at 21.45 the wind was going straight through my trousers We decided to have another go Thursday night but set out a little earlier. We arrived at just gone 19.00 and had a zero check at 200yds to check the windage. Around 1/2 an hour later one was lamped out on the fence line 250yds this one again wasnt coming into the call (strange that) it popped its head up and down like it was playing peek a boo. but its body didnt move, Front on chest shot It didnt even move when i hit it with a 50nosler, the lamper thought it was another Fox as he caught the Fox,s eye in the lamp, So i shot it again, It looked as if it was just sitting looking at us,,,you cant be too sure.. These next 2 were last night on another patch , it should have been 3 but some how one managed to dodge a 53grn v max  just cant figure it out. I put a full Cola Can out at the same didtance. That wasnt a problem, just one lucky Fox, Moments after popping the can it wasnt even 2 minutes a pair of eyes appeared this one decided to run into the field away from cover then it stopped then seemed to be waving its head about like it was on a spring up and down, side to side but not moving its body much. Again a front chest shot but just glanced its head as it duct about, didnt move much.169yds. We then heard a Fox calling over the road, so quickly popped over climbed some silage bails and put the call out we didnt have to wait too long as one appeared behind us and ran along the hedge line in the next field, it stopped just in front of a large Oak but obscured by dead nettles. I could just make through them without too much trouble, Both these were with the Tikka and 53grn Vmax

If its a M55 and has the original barrel I would guess it's had a few rounds through it, it's over 30 years old. Your grouping as you say an inch at 100 yds is very good considering. Find a reloader near you for advice. And don't get chasing rainbows

Slightly off topic but along the lines, A little wimp at our place whos off for weeks wth a runny nose had bought an American Bull dog (bitch), Had it serviced by another, the pups grew happily together, a few were sold as pups he kept a pup with its mother, and shortly after one of them gets its face bitten so badly its put down. What i cant understand with these people is whats the thing with having these types of dogs as a pet, bearing in mind the above muppet is out of the house 5 days a week for 11 hrs and nights will be simalar. And the dogs alone They have no understanding of the creatures habbits or any idea how to look after them. It takes me back to when youths had great big gold coloured medalions hanging around there necks. "Look how macho i am" Licence them all and dont make it too cheap,

I use strelok + it got me on a 4inch disk at 405yds a few weeks ago with just the basic info put into it when i used my latest re-barreled 22.250. I have used it with good results after crows and magpies out to 375yds with another 22.250, The updates just keep coming its a brilliant "app" the + version gives you so many options, too many to think of.

If you have got your mind set on a HMR then it will be difficult to persuaded you to change your mind. But !!! If you just need a dedicated tool for Fox there are better more suitable options, that give the shooter more margin for errors. Deckers is correct, yes it will do the job BUT it needs to be in range, shoot a few hear the contact, but pick nothing up were you think the Fox should be, and you will see why people choose different calibers. They deserve better.
