  1. East. The fishing is good around Shetland, just off from my house is soft bottom with haddock and whiting.
  2. Thanks for all the comments about where I stay, its a cracking spot on my wife's family croft. Here is another pic I stole from our neighbors after her trip in the helicopter.
  3. The kids love playing around the old houses and yes the pigs are destined for the freezer, probably within the next couple of months.
  4. Generally speaking, the rabbits around here feed all night and sit in the long tufty grass through the day which makes for some fantastic walked up rabbit shooting. There is no trees or hedges up here in Shetland and unless in sandy ground they don't have warrens they go to through the day. Here is max pointing a rabbit, if I have the .22 I will keep max on point till I shoot it and if I have the shotgun I will get him to bolt the rabbit so I can have a crack at it.
  5. We had a bit of a disaster with the pigs, after eating rhubarb they both died. I never knew that rhubarb was poisonous and very very few of the people I have spoken to knew either even the farmer I got them from didn't know. We were devastated. So beware anyone with pigs. We got another two pigs from the same litter which have altered the appearance of the front garden somewhat. I found this picture on FB today after our neighbor was up in the coastguard helicopter for a run today, you can see where the live rotavators have been working. (I should really be on the extension roof getting that finished instead of on here ha ha)
  6. Congratulations and well done to him, best of luck in his future career
  7. Fish and liver mashed together is called stap here in Shetland and I love it. The liver on it's own is really strong but mixed in with the fish is excellent but the liver needs to be a good size and really light coloured, sometimes it's really small and red.
  8. My preferred way to cook ling is cut into chunks and boiled. Also, depending on the condition of the liver, boil the liver in a grease proof paper package along with the fish and mash it all up together and have with boiled potato's.
  9. I got these trousers as a gift but they don't fit. Worn once just to try on, never worn since. Russell outdoors, mossy oak duck blind camo. 36W 32L £20 inc postage.
  10. Greys GX 300 #6,7,8 reel Greys GS 9'6" #7 rod Snowbee vest Landing net Leader line 12 dry flies 142 wet flies 38 sea trout flies 90% of the flies are from flies online which I found to be really good quality. The rod, reel and line are in fantastic condition due to lack of use. £150 + £8 P&P
  11. We have had some cracking weather up here in the far flung north, but yesterday we had some serious rain. It rained heavy the whole day, and with the ground being so dry we had some bad land slides blocking roads. http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2014/08/10/floods-and-landslides-after-a-day-of-deluge
  12. Thanks for putting that up, very interesting video
  13. Excellent, that's a trip you won't forget in a hurry.
  14. Well done on the herring, I have never managed to catch a herring before. And you are right, a fresh herring is delicious.
  15. Excellent, well done on your first deer and the head looks fantastic
  16. Crimping with a lee crimping die definitely tightened up my groups with the .223 and the hornet, more so with the .223. The only other thing I can add and its already been mentioned is consistency, I try to do everything exactly the same every time.
  17. Personally I think the mackerel have been over fished but some may disagree. Cant blame the lack of feed because from what I have been hearing the sea birds have had the best breeding season for years, plenty of feed and close to home too. Puffins coming back to the nest with that classic beak full of sandy eels which I haven't seen for a long while.
  18. Everyone I speak to here is struggling with the mackerel, very patchy. I was out this morning with my cousin but the mist locked in, we had plenty of Pollock for kreel bait then we tried for a ling and only got 2 but we didn't go far out as visibility was only about 40 yards. We did see one porpoise though.

  20. Very handsome chap, top photo is a cracker
  21. I put one on Max on the very coldest days, and as was said before, it helps a lot with buoyancy. I think the one I have is made by doken.
  22. I would have shot the *****r too if I caught him steeling my cartridges
