  1. As already posted, the only problem I have had is with the Hornady blue tipped I have had no problem with red tipped other than an occasional split case after firing.. I have faith in my rifle not being at fault,it has been acknowledged by Hornady I believe that they have a problem with the necking down of the cases and hope they are doing something about it. Can anyone else identify which round has been at fault from their experiences.
  2. My information tells me it is around 70 ft/lb at 200 yards down range. Certainly not a foxing range for hmr but smaller quarry in the right conditions, no problem.
  3. I have read on this and other forums of at least two HMR ammunition brands having this problem. I personally have had two that have fired the primer, which is enough to send the round up the chamber but not ignited the charge.I have also had four hang fires all with the Hornady blue tips. (out of approx 1000 rounds used) Had no problems to date with the red tips. I listen for anything untoward and look for the impact every time I fire a round, whatever rifle I fire. It is a rubbish situation we are in with these faults but I would not be without my .17 HMR.

    Red kite

I was out for the crows today and had a few down when I saw what I thought was a Buzzard approaching, as it neared me it became obvious it was a Red Kite and what a stunning bird it is. It passed within twenty yards.I know they are quite common in some areas now but I have never seen one prior to today. Has anyone else seen one near this area.(10 miles or so from Chester)
  5. You have obviously missed the humour.
  6. As has already been said, should have been headshot and then debate would not have gone this way.
  7. Glad to hear someone else admit to missing sitting targets, I blame my easy misses on adrenalin after a long wait. However a good outcome, and you have left at least two rabbits for another day.

    Barn Owls

Not seen one for a while, used to watch two quartering the fields behind our house. One of our most beautiful birds in my opinion. Was out one night last week for a couple of hours or so on one of my permissions trying out my new diy add on night vision for the first time watching fox, rabbit and badger at 100+ yards distance and then a barn owl appeared and kept circling the same area. Magical bird and great to watch for 10 minutes or so.I saw my first Tawny Owl on this same permission last year. Didn,t fire a shot in all this time out as I was too preoccupied watching all the normally unseen activity. Probably do it again and leave the gun unloaded.Or put together a NV spotter, now that I have done my first add on. PS I found the Owl program last night to be fascinating and worth a watch if it repeats.
  9. Buried it where I shot it, and this particular sett is on neighbouring land. I have actually seen Badgers in the middle of the day, albeit briefly. Didn't fancy carrying it three or four hundred yards to get to a suitable dumping point, as I said this perm has Badgers all over, hence my original question.
  10. If I received that message I would consider it a threat, without doubt. Report him.
  11. That is/was my thoughts, but can't find an alternative explanation as yet. Other fox left in an out of way place in the past have been left to decay and Badgers are prevalent all over this particular land. Next Fox is going to be monitored with a trail cam.
  12. It was a Vixen, but could not be found within fifty yards of where I buried it.
  13. I shot and buried a fox on one of my permissions the other week. On returning 3 days later I found the fox had been dug up and on the surface about 10 feet away. I buried it over a foot deep and it was about 30 yards from a Badger sett.(Loads on and about this farm.) I thought "I will come back tomorrow and find a deeper site further away". On my return the next day, no trace of the fox was to be found and the farmer had not shifted it. I can only assume that Brock had dug it up and ultimately dragged it away for consumption (?).The farmers son said that Badgers have in the past took calves, still born at night, from his fields. Wish I had set my trail cam up now. Anyone any other idea or had a similar experience.
  14. I believe the above to be correct. Just had fox and AOLQ condition added for my 17 hmr as opposed to Vermin and ground game. Under Merseyside, fox is not covered by 'vermin' condition. 'Fox' must be on your ticket. Did not ask for .22 LR to be included even though I believe it to be well able under the right circumstances. We must comply with the conditions stated on licence and if you want clarification check it out with FEO. At the end of the day they gave you the licence with the conditions and the conditions were accepted on receipt. No one wants to be a test case for what is legal or not.
  15. At worst, you 'may' have to spend another 30-40 pounds but you will still have night vision good for 80+ yards.for £60 ish. Air gun shooters will be queuing at your door to give you your money back for it and you have 'had a play and learned for yourself. I do however bow to all the excellent info to be gained from reading the multitude of posts freely given by very knowledgable lads on here and other forums.
  16. My open ticket is in the post as we type. Have you asked for an open ticket when putting in for a variation? It's worth it as that's what I did.
  17. My thoughts are it should not have to be checked, but what do I know. Every shot you take is your responsibility. Ring your FEO and ask. He / she is the only one to give you the answer.
  18. It looks like a hair from 40 yards but in fact it's a rabbit.
  19. I have a Hogan mod on mine (because it came with the rifle) and cannot fault it.
