  1. In the 50's a a die hard poacher living across the street from me called me over one day and had me holding the tails of a litter of Jack Russell terriers so he could dock the tails of them with a razor blade, one at a time.I would have been about eight at the time..He was a miner and would be out at all hours for food for the table. In the sixties 3 or 4 of us lads could walk through the streets with guns and dogs, on our way to whichever land we had chosen to shoot and no one would blink an eye. Shotguns and air rifles were swapped and sold all around and I do not remember any crime with their use being reported.
  2. Some time ago I too was sat quietly in a hedge by the side of a wood, listening to the hunt going on, when I heard movement behind me in the undergrowth. When a pack of hounds came, one at a time through between myself and a large oak and not six foot from me. They where following a scent from a fox that had come out in my view 5 minutes earlier. Each hound gave me a quick sideways glance as they passed, almost within touching distance. They cut left and picked up the scent and followed it to the inch it seemed. It was at least five minutes later and the hunt could still be heard in the far distance when the last hound came by me, he stopped at the oak and gave me a long lingering look (he looked knackered) whilst catching his breath. He loped out onto the pasture about 20 yards and stopped to listen for the pack and duly moved on in their direction. I was totally in awe at the close encounter and shocked at the size of the hounds when looking eye to eye with them.
  3. When I replaced gauge seal on mine (when I had one) it only had an 'O' ring fitted under the gauge. The part number suggests that ie OR004, 'OR' for O ring.
  4. Anyone else getting error message when trying to access Guntrader site.Been like this for me for over a fortnight.( ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR )
  5. PM sent re possible supplier.
  6. My misreading UD, I was stuck on a different tangent to you , I had to shim the scope on a BSA Supersport once because of barrel droop.
  7. I appreciate that point and take it into consideration but was assuming a near horizontal shot as no inclination up or down was mentioned.
  8. What ammo is the 4" holdover with Steve? Using Eley subs I give it nearly double that holdover and HV 5" +, both at 100yd with 50m zero. Regarding long range plinking I find Hawke BRC good for getting in the ball park and prefer to estimate the hold over based on the BRC figure rather than mil dots etc.Until I get my finger out and tie it down to my mil dot ret. I really enjoy long range plinking with both 22LR and especially HMR, in favourable conditions, well at least with a consistent wind.
  9. Definitely a good day, well done.
  10. Good luck in whatever you decide to do, but I came back to it after 30 odd years away from shooting.
  11. Small B&Q safe is fine fixed as Steve b says but do not get the digital one as they are not very secure at all.
  12. Good mixed bag there, well shot.
  13. No access to it as it says 'SSL connection error' whenever I try to connect.
  14. Had a vixen calling near my home 2 weeks ago.
  15. 'Any' inadequacies or failings as you call them shown up by any means are down to the management to identify and resolve. If they fail to provide suitable key monitoring points and appropriate action when problems are shown then they are at fault. I intended to illustrate failures in the System and did not apportion blame on any section of the department. in fact acknowledged staffing levels as one area of concern. Higher management in any area of work are always responsible for correcting failures in the system. 'Inadequate ' staff occur at all levels and after a lifetime of work I have seen it for myself, don't be so touchy and accept it. I again reiterate not once have I said dept staff are inadequate which you seem to imply I may have. I hope I have clarified my post.
  16. It may be that If the need to issue a temp certificate is down to their inadequaces and not yours, it may flag up in their system and show their failings and therefore someone may be answerable. This is possible considering the apparent understaffing in these department. Likewise if it is applicants error in submitting late etc they can insist storeage at RFD etc and no argument can be made. Just a thought.
  17. I agree with Kent, in the respect, my gun shoots low and coupled with the fact I have been shooting rifles more than shotgun i felt I was missing below all the time. I find it difficult to blank out the bird without overthinking the shot regardless of lead. So I fitted a comb raiser and now don't need to even think, I just do what I do automatically and it has increased my average greatly and given me more confidence. As has been said, I tend to give a pigeon length in front for crossers generally and increase as needed and I am still working on that problem but I am not getting frustrated any more, well not every time out anyway. I am a very long way from being proficient but not constantly missing below has given me the confidence to make further improvements with lead and swing etc.
  18. Pheasant is Manchunian (cross) Just to late.. edit, meant Manchurian, but it's time for bed now. But could spanish gun be Armas.
  19. Google 'air watch agent', it may give you some idea.
  20. It would be ok if he had been facing the tree as in "tree hugger">.
  21. Yes four legs but only two in contact with the ground and easily pivoted to get on target.
  22. Quad sticks as Euget123s' post are perfect for the job and do not cost a lot to make. I use them for air rifle and rimfire. I would not be without them.
  23. After 3 nights out (last winter) testing my new diy add on, not fired a shot yet having been too busy just watching Rabbit, Fox, Badger and Barn Owl going about their business. It was fascinating and is what I love about being out and about at any time, day or night.
  24. The seed was sown a long time ago, I used to fly fish at night for sea trout and get home very early hours of the morning. When telling my brother (also an angler) about the session the following day in the presence of my wife, he said (jokingly) " you have never been fishing on your own until that time of night" that sentence set the scene for past 30 years as it had never occurred to her that I may have been up to no good. Her face was a picture. Been happily married 47 years this year though.
