  1. I bought a primos power crow caller and gave up after not enough practice. After the reviews on this forum I went back to it and tried a bit more and have had good results. As Steve B says try a good "grrrr" as this seems to work well. Keep practising and you will get good results.
  2. To be fair I think that they are probably deaf after the first shot
  3. I agree that the .17 HMR is indeed a noisy rifle even with a mod but I have dropped 5 in a row with the .17 all within 10 yards of each other.
  4. Sounds like you have all your bases covered there.Good luck but hopefully you wont need it.
  5. .17 HMR for me , Anschutz 1517 thumbhole 18" barrel.
  6. Agree with you there mate. I do the majority of my shooting solo though now with NV kit. The majority of the ground I cover is only really suitable on foot due to crops, steepness etc so I can go at my own pace and be nice and quiet. One of the pieces of ground I shoot is a mates and he comes out every other time I go up. Pretty well every time he comes I dont shoot anything and when he doesnt come I normally get a shot. I am sure he is a Jonah. However this highlights the difference between a sociable outing and a pest control outing. I enjoy the outing with the 2 of us more but the ones on my own are more productive. I suppose it depends on set up and having a good understanding of what the lamper/shooter is doing/wants to do. Well done crowdie sounds like you have had a good start.
  7. Wow indeed. Those are seriously early. The adults are still in mating mode round my area at the moment. That is shocking behaviour (even more shocking then the controversy of your posts). better get yourself sorted as we cant have this continuing.
  8. If I have your seal of approval all is good with the world. I will carry on without fear of criticism.. apart from those haters of the .270 (but dont really care about such comments).
  9. To be fair I mainly use the .243 as it is set up with a NV scope. 75 Grain Hornady SST rounds do the job nicely. I do like using the .270 as it is a nice rifle though (and this is a controversial comment) I think 130 grain soft points may be a little much for a fox.
  10. Since all of the grief that you get for your controversial posts (Vulpes Vulpes springs to mind) I am only using the .243 and .270 for the foxes..and occasionally the .17 HMR.I dont have thick enough skin to take the abuse you have recently. Good going as usual and keep up the good work.
  11. The officer dealing with the Firearms applications is literally rushed off his feet. "Fire Fighting" is the term that came to mind as my visit was 5 days before my licence expired so that gives you some idea of where they are.
  12. If you are a novice I hate to think what that makes the majority of us like me. I would have to declare myself a sub novice on this basis
  13. Cracking picture. In relation to shooting pigeons I would have thought with all of your experience you would have figured out how to shoot them by now?
  14. When I had my renewal sorted last month the firearms team mentioned that one of my permissions had no evidence of deer. Once I gave the guy the dates of the 2 fallow bucks I had shot and sent him an e-mail confirming this he seemed happy. Not really necessary as I hold an open ticket but keeps their records up to date. All good fun.
  15. Just one point, put "Deer, foxes and AOLQ" in the column for use. AOLQ means Any Other Lawful Quarry and is pretty well a cover all. Forces should put this down automatically but they dont always. This would allow you to legally shoot a rabbit (not suggesting you do as the calibre is a little big but if your licence only allows Deer and Foxes you would technically be breaking the condition of your ticket).
  16. I hate seeing the usual inconsistent approach by differing forces in dealing with these sort of issues. I agree with Kes that it shouldnt be a requirement to have a "formal" qualification. I live in the Dyfed Powys area and put in a variation for a .270 after having my FAC for 8 years (largest previous calibre of .223). I have a few fallow on some ground I shoot and also access to a fair few thousand acres in the SW via a friend. No issues with the issue of my variation and no mention of additional quals. I have undertaken my DSC 1 but this is to allow me to sell to a game dealer. My mate who I shoot with has been shooting deer for 35+ years and shoots in excess of 70-80 per year, he doesnt have a formal qualification and his knowledge of deer, firearms etc is outstanding. He is also an awesome shot. Experience not a piece of paper is the key thing...unfortunately these days you seem to need the piece of paper to start and get the experience. Good luck with this and hopefully sense will prevail.
  17. Nice to hear such praise for Dyfed Powys Police Firearms team but there has been a major restructure lately and they are up against it. Submitted my coterminous renewal early Sep 2014, visit w/c 05th Jan in certs back on the 16th Jan. Allow 8-12 weeks for the time being especially if you are in North Powys. However the fact that a cheque has been cashed is certainly a positive.
  18. Great bits of kit. I had a CZ 527 in .223 for years. Now have a Howa 1500 in .243 which I get on well with but it is a bit on the heavy side for my skinny frame (varmint laminate stainless). Shoots well so happy to put up with a sore shoulder after a 3-4 hour walk. Keep up the good work.
  19. The people who put comment like bla bla bla are complete..fools (cant post anything stronger). Ignore such stupid comments and keep posting. As Underdog mentioned he seems to be in the firing line for most of the abuse at the moment. Simple way to avoid it get a 30mm and only head shoot animals (apart from deer as that would create a controversial post and I dont want to take any lime light from Underdog)
