  1. Well done for moving around before settling down to the business . A good result.
  2. I agree there is no right or wrong method , I did in the past post a picture of my set up on the rape using twelve real birds as decoys. I carry a tube of fifty bike spokes and stop putting decoys when I've used them. All the pattern are in range. That's what works for me, I hope it helps.
  3. It is very difficult to pull birds off a flightlne even on the same field let alone two fields away. I applaud you for trying something different ( he who dares Rodney ) that's the only way to improve your decoying . Well done.
  4. Just use your two forefingers round the neck and separate the head from the neck.
  5. Do not dispare, we all had days like that . When I started on my first shoot I was there from dawn till dusk for nine birds. Just keep at it , try moving the pattern about , magnet on/off, try keeping dead still and see if they will land in your pattern then MOVE MOUNT SHOOT. If the birds pass to your left or right put a flyer coming into your pattern from that direction. Try and remember what works and use it again. All the best in the future.
  6. My thoughts on discing after combining are that the birds are forced to find the fields which have seed still on them, so it concentrates the birds on certain fields especially the one's that are still boggy and difficult to work on. These tend to be in the river/ stream valleys which also have trees and woods and will normally have a flightlne running close by. Just a thought.
  7. Well done for a good day out. Your comment about driving your car over the field took me back too many years . I presented an ancient Volvo estate for a MOT after driving over rape stubble and the comments about the cleanest car ever presented .
  8. Well done for starting him young. If you grow up with guns you respect them not fantasise over then on a computer game.
  9. It's one of those nights you dream of and only comes after a lot if effort and determination. This is your payback . Well done.
  10. We have loads of shooters in our area as I said in the post there were shooters on the same farm as us. The trick is to first find the birds.
  11. Nice to see " pellet guns" taking vermin, you need real field craft to shoot them, well done.
  12. Friday, Picked DB up at 09.00 in the pouring rain, we looked at each other and confimed that we were Mad, headed out to an area that is shot regulary but has lots of stubble. Found a rape stubble field that had a few feeding at the up wind edge. Contacted the farmer and he told us it had been shot two days before and they only had fifty. We watched the field for about fifteen minutes and two joined but the bonus was that the rain had stopped so we set up. We were shooting by eleven with the birds not decoying at all so we made lots of changes but it made no effect, by this time the rain and wind were giving us a bad time I had to lean on the brolly shaft to stop it taking the hide down. While all this was going on the birds started to pile in and I managed to tie the brolly secure. When the rain stopped and the sun came out the birds just swiched off . We packed up at 16.00 and picked up one hundred and twelve birds. Sturday Picked DB up at 09.00 and decided to drive round to a farm we only shoot in the summer as the flight line can be awesome but it can also be nil. We drove to the farm and told the farmer that we would be about he said that some other shooters were on the south fields. We set off looking and found a stubble barley field with a few birds feeding down by the stream, we could hear the other shooters in the distance having lots of shots, we could see the flightline to there field and it was constant. We had a different flightline to our field so we set up. We were shooting by 11.30 and started to collect a good number of birds and we realised that this could be a mega day the other shooters were matching us shot for shot. we stopped shooting at 17.00 as I realised that I would start to have a problem freezing the number of birds. We picked up three hundred and eighty four birds. We presume that the other shooters must have had a simular amount . What a Day!!!!!!
  13. Well done to get the birds, we were out today and they would not decoy but they gave us some cracking passing shots.
  14. Sorry for your loss , you have the memories which will stay with you for ever. My shooting partner lost his brother on Tuesday a true countryman. Time will heal your loss.
