ollie
Well all the negative talk about the .22lr recently hasn't put me off. My permit is up for renewal soon and I am looking at purchasing a .22lr for vermin control. The thing that attracts me about the .22lr is the realtive cheap cost of the rounds and the fact that it is an effective tool in vermin control. What I want to know is which model should I be looking for? I am looking for a bolt action. Also what price should I expect to pay for the rifle? Finally what sound moderator would you recommend? Cheers lads. Edited November 30, 2009 by ollie

garyb
CZ or BRNO.. in Bolt Action. Look for European rifles, and steer clear of the Yank ones
albob
do not be put off by what others say,it is mainly shooters experience that they are telling you about it and not putting you off, just making you aware of any problems. i got a hmr first before the 22lr,as i heard the horrors of the dreaded ricochets..took me a while before a got one and did have a lot of ricochets at first but, this was the ground i shot on(not my shoot but,a mates who never warned me about it,so i never take it for granted now and check). had very few ricochets now,say 1 in 500 rounds if that. i use it a lot now and it is as effective and better than air rifle on rabbits and very quiet.ammo is cheap to. i use a cz 22lr 16" with a parker hale silencer.. al

Paddy Galore!
CZs are good allrounders, only problem i find is they dont seem to "fit" all that well, i know theyre only rim fires but it would be nice if they considered larger people. My all time favorite would be my sako quad, i love this gun! bit pricey for a rimmy but some good 2nd hand ones come up for sale once in a while. Even better than that were the sako finnfires, which were a dedicated .22.
bicykillgaz
cz-452 varmint - £ not sure i've not really looked recently but plenty of good second hand sako mod - £30 eley subs hollow point
pigeon master
Sako varmint heavy barrel in .22LR top class rifle, much better quality than most but not easy to find in the used market.
Beardo
you can pick up an old Anschutz for sub £200 - great rifle that will last a lifetime, or go for a CZ/Brno
bigstevouk
How about a BSA supersport or BSA sportsman........ both bolt action, these will shoot superb and being in the under £100 bracket you won't be disappointed

bruno22rf
BRNO 452-had mine for many years and looks like new-only ever zeroed it twice!
Paddy Galore!
should be able to pick up a 2nd hand sako or anschutz for around £450. new ones are more like £700. as for moderators it's really down to personal taste in size and shape as they all do the same job on a .22 quite well. saw a bsa supersport a couple of months ago but spare mags are a problem apparently, nice solid gun tho. cz are always a safe bet. just depends how much you're willing to part with. I know a chap in norwich who makes rifle stocks in his spare time, very reasonable prices too, made me a TR42 stock.

ollie
if you want to try a hw60j in 22lr or cz in hmr give me a shout mate. tam glass should have something in. Where are you from mate? I am up at Tam pretty often so prob check out what he has in stock and I'll probably try McCloy aswell. Cheers everyone for your advice, I probably would look to buy a new gun because I like the gun to be in tip-top shape. I was probably thinking more of Sako or Brno but 1 of my uncles had an anschutz before and he always had great reports of it. What would I expect to pay for a new Sako or Brno? Is there any sort of moderator that works better with these rifles?
bicykillgaz
i've had 3 different mods on my cz-452 varmint a logun which was pathetic and cost me £60, a parker hale which i destroyed as i couldn't group two shots it was ok noise wise but nothing special and my sako which i still have on which is the best and cheapest i've had at £30 very very quiet. for the gun, logun mod, and hawke scope, napier roll up rifle sling and 500 cci subs i payed around £380 cash plus he gave me £150 for my hatsan escort which i felt violated about as it had a mount for a lightforce lamp, cartridge belt, slip, tru-glo front sight, i'd put sling swivels on it plus a decent neoprene realtree sling and it was in absolute mint condition no scratches or anything and not even had 1000 shells through it, and that will be two years ago in march mate. the rifle makes up for having my pants pulled down over the escort though

ollie
Been looking at some reviews online and there are some great reports on the Finnfire. Can you get it in synthetic stock? I like the look of these rifles. I'm gonna have a shop round over the xmas period and maybe treat myself.
