Thunderbird
I have some mice invading the kitchen cupboards, what's the best bait? I heard somewhere it was chocolate...

mr lee
Nutella or peanut butter. Something they have to stay with to eat. A piece of chocolate can be removed and eaten away from the trap. Something soft that they have to stay and eat 'on site' so to speak gives you far more chance of them tripping the trap and being caught. Daveo26
Check for proofing faults aswell mate. airgrates etc or they will just get in again. IU second the Chocolate or peanut butter
Imperfection
Chocolate spread or peanut butter. If they're getting in through airbricks or holes etc-try pushing some wirewool in.It still allows air movement, but no rodent will gnaw through it (its the texture which puts them off). steve_b_wales
I've always used chocolate, something like Galaxy /Dairy Milk. providing the trap is sensitive enough, and the chocolate is fixed properly, it will work everytime. decroyffe
The mice we had when we first moved in wouldn't touch peanut butter, and only ever took the chocolate, but the type they died for, (excuse the pun) was kinder surprise eggs. Has mentioned above tho, your wasting your time trapping, until all the routes in and out of the house are sealed off. Until there contained within the house, and all other food source's are out of reach, there'd be no reason for them to entertain traps. wingnut
We sorted ours out with a piece of a mars bar stuck on the trap. We tried the chocolate spread and peanut butter, they seemed to prefer the mars bar, it never failed to catch

mattslaptop247
We have some rats taking poultry feed from an out building. I intend shooting them with a garden gun. Up til now we havn't physically seen them, just their evidence, if you know what I mean  Is it best to put some chocolate out in a regular place so they visit the same spot for easier shooting? DSPUK
How about a cat -- No perhaps not -- ours bought one in and let it go unknown to us - it made a home behind a kitchen draw with chewed up plasters from next cupboard - bit of cheese on trap got it within an hour of us knowing it was there. - also heard brazil nuts work. smig4373
Chocolate or peanut butter. Surely chocolate cant be good for a mouse's teeth...haha.... Agree with the chocolate advice....Works the same with rats to....Sprinkle a little drinking chocolate around the trap,And put a chuck of bournville or other dark choco on the trap......

Thunderbird
And...we have a result! A Cadbury's Chocolate Button, part of the toddler's Xmas haul! Overnight last night it was, the little blighter wouldn't have felt a thing considering how stoved-in his head was. I told the Mrs it would not have suffered and she said 'I don't give a **** if it did, I think of it the same way as a burglar!' That's my girl. Anyway, have set the traps again and am looking for the infiltration point now... Edited January 4, 2010 by Thunderbird
njc110381
When I set traps for customers I always use a small slice of Snickers. Hearing the chocolate/peanut comments on here I can see why it's so good now! It rarely fails.
rjimmer
Mix candle wax and cocoa together and mould it onto the trap spikes, if chocolate won't stay on. The Mars options sounds an obvious one to try!
