Ballymac
My neighbour and I were out shooting greybacks and magpies and afterwards at his house having a cuppa he produced a copy of a shooting catalogue that had a section of dog toys which included a stuffed fox. Now this is a floppy toy, 32" long and my neighbour suggests setting this along a hedge to attract the attention of crows and magpies long enough for us to get a shot.We will try setting a magpie or crow beside the toy etc, but do not envisage sitting for hours in the one spot. The idea would be to be mobile and cover a large area without carrying too much equipment Has anyone tried this with any success. Here is a link to the toy. http://www.johnnorris.co.uk/search/7549-or...g-toy-7873.html
Beardo
never tried it, but i'd imagine it to be as successful as using and owl decoy (read that as you will ). corvids certainly do mob foxes regularly, so it's got to be worth a go - but rather than buying a toy fox - why don't you bag a real one to test the theory. Ballymac
Have tested the theory, my neighbour had spotted crows and magpies mobbing something and got in to position to find a fox that had been sleeping in the corner of a field and was now disturbed by these birds. They took no notice of my neighbour and he shot the fox. That's why he had this idea, as he said the birds were more concerned with mobbing the fox than they were of avoiding him. So in theory it should work, we just don't want to lug a fox in and out of the car from field to field etc just thought a less "smelly" way would be to use a toy fox
steve_b_wales
It may work. I once saw a DVD where the Warrener draped a fox pelt over a frame, and set it out in the field. The Crows etc mobbed it straight away.

markbivvy
The opposite happend to me I was out shooting crows over a hanful of crow decoys and using Sam Neyts crow caller(Best on the market) and this was about 2 o clock in the day. I was out with my cousin and not a thing was coming in next thing I looked up wasn't there a dog fox about 25 yards I got up and fired I only had 32g 6's barely made him flinch, I regret firing at him now. Anyway I was there cursing myself at not killing him when about 15yrds away a vixen was coming towards me she was coming straight for me I taught she was close enough fired two shots they badly wounded her but she still got away. :o :o :o brace yourself. :o

Tin hat at the ready . Your shooting musn't be great if you can't kill 2 foxes at that range with 6's. Also the vixen came towards you after you had fired at the dog fox with the shotgun? I highly doubt a fox would be that stupid.

Let's get this right?? You fired both barrels (loaded with 6 shot) at a dog at a dog fox that was about 25 yards out, only made him "flinch"? (At that range even 6 shot should have dropped him) Then while you were regretting shooting at him and still cursing at not killing him (This must have only been within a few short moments unless your vocabulary is that limited that all you can do is an awful lot of cursing) a vixen comes straight towards you and you let her have both barrels at 15 yards and allow her to get away badly wounded? Have I got the situation right?? Firstly I would be extremely surprised if a vixen would come that close to you within such a short time of firing both barrels of a shotgun at the dog fox (Unless it was to tell curse at you for wounding her "meal ticket") and secondly if she did come that close to you so quickly how on earth did you manage to only wound her with both barrels and let her get away? Either your shooting leaves an awful lot to be desired or they forgot to put any lead shot in your cartridges and it was only the wad that hit the vixen or of course you should lay off the Guinness for a very long time as it is effecting your story telling abilities as well as your shooting!. Whatever it was I hope that you are suitably disgusted with yourself for such disgraceful shooting and cruel behaviour, it's certainly nothing to be proud of nor is it something you should have posted on an open forum! If ever you decide to take any pot shots at foxes again make sure you know what you are doing and use the right tools for the job, or stick to story telling! Grab a cheap fox skin coat or scarf and dress the spaniel up for the day I have just read this post and almost wet myself! Try to picture the scene - Your poor little spaniel running about the field in the heat of the mid day sun sweating its little tail off while done up to the nines in a damned great big simulated fox fur coat and scarf looking like some wannabe pop star and having to duck every time it hears a shot being fired! The mind boggles, mind you it shows how warped my brain is doesn't it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does that mean that I have finally flipped??? wymberley
Putting all else to one side, it is possible for the vixen or any other animal to run at the shooter following a shot; it's happened to me twice, fox and hare. An animal will react to the last disturbance. I shot one fox and the second hurtled at me reacting to the echo of that shot from the nearby wood. The hare got up, I missed as it ran toward an old aircraft hangar, off went "the second shot" and it turned around and came straight back and this time my aim was better. Cheers

sako751sg
Can work superbly well. The old fella skinned a fox,and filled with expanding foam.He puts it out with a rabbit or such, and the blackies mob and become very unwary and shootable. Wise up, **** off to some other forum and spout your rubbish on it. I obviously know a bit more about foxing than you do going by your posts. Yes a fox will sometimes run on if the placement isn't right or your not using big enough shot. But to say a Vixen ran straight at you after you had fired 2 shots at the other fox; wise up, foxes are one of the smartest animals about.
