How well did we shoot today? 2011 edition.

Well I shot most of this shoot today and I'm sorry to disagree with Azzurri but with the exception of the catering I thought the whole shebang was a total bag of ****. They had 12 stands and I think we shot it later than Azzurri and we had breakdowns of one sort or another on probably half of them :oops: basic stuff like batteries requiring changing, running out of clays and not having any boxes by the trap! no comms between the marker and the ground staff so said marker sets off back to cabin to report lack of clays, eventually ground staff turns up on quad and takes what seemed an eternity to refill trap.

To compound our misery on this stand (rabbit & L to R looper) the marker wasn't calling out names and when it was our band of threes turn to shoot he'd given my mates card to the previous group :angry: We chased then to about 5 stands away and it turned out he'd marked one of that groups score onto my mates card, back to the stand and another 10 mins wasted trying to sort that out. All could have been avoided if he'd shouted out names. He also gave a kill to my other mate on a rabbit that rolled un-broken on into the distance which Mr Magoo would have spotted :no:

This was after a half hour wait on stand three after a breakdown, groundsman took a battery to the trap, twice before announcing it was terminal and we would be better moving on ;)

Final straw was stand 9, we had kept passing it as it was broken down until it was the only stand left to shoot, after about 20 mins it was working again, 2 shooters later it was broken again, another 15 mins back in business for about 3 shooters then broken down. That was it, all the shooters waiting, about a dozen, just walked away, we saw the ground owner on the way back to the cabin but our request for a £3 re-fund (5 pairs at 30p a target) fell on deaf ears.

Got to confess I've never been a great fan of Worsley's targets, to paraphrase Chard "not enough sky". Most targets had to be shot on the drop, very little in the open definitely too many trees.

I hated every minute of it, I won't be shooting the England selection shoot there and the ground is virtually on my doorstep. I won't say I'll never go there again but I won't rush back other than for the sportrap which I'll give a go.

Score? I don't know, bear in mind we only shot 90 targets but there were already enough zeros on my card to form the Japanese air force :lol: The thing was I didn't really care either, I did see Azzurri's 87 on the board as I got a brew and a pie and thought to myself that is an awesome score on those targets and I mean awesome :good::good:

Good luck to anyone who travels to shoot the England selection shoot, if the fiasco that was today is repeated it will turn into a bigger **** up than the last one.

Really sorry to hear you had such a **** day,we had a breakdown and the way some stands were set up it may have been better to have them as simmo pairs.I must admit towards the end i was finding it hard to keep any concentration going.

I wont be going to the selection shoot either, i can see it being a long day :hmm:

And talking of re funds, here's one for you...

A few years ago a friend and i started a 100 reg sporting shoot there,we shot the first two stands, then went to the third, handed our cards in and waited our turn.

After about 30 mins i asked the scorer to see when we were on as you get a feeling when it's about to be your turn don't you.Our cards weren't in the pile and the marker had obviously handed them to some other shooters leaving the stand along with their cards !

We couldn't find our cards so we went back to the entries desk and explained our problem. We asked for another couple of cards and said we would start at stand 3 so that our scores from stands 1 and 2 could be taken from the master sheets. The reply from the ground owner was 'No'. Then we asked for our money back and guess what the answer was.....'No'

This has stuck in my mind for a lot of years and the only reason i went there today was to support the team i am in.

Don't get me wrong,i still wish the ground well, but they still owe me 30 odd quid

Azzurri.

Bloddy hell Azzurri, you're a better man than me, if the ground owner had treated me like that I would never have darkened his doorstep again.

As with our card disappearance today that could have been avoided if the referee or marker calls out the name of the shooter, the name of the following shooter and the name of the shooter to get ready. I really don't think it's too much to ask.

unless you know who was before you name calling from the ref doesnt resolve this issue.

ive been there before a few times, usually at straw baler shoots where the ref doesnt really have a clue what they are doing.

it doesnt take much for them to give a couple of extra cards to the guy who has just shot.

ive also seen a scorer drop about 40 cards on a windy day! you can forget shooting as a squad when that happens, i think i ended up shooting 12 cards after my dad, LOL

I went to the Police Shoot there last year as a member of one of the guest teams but that was the first time i had been back there for years. The lost cards and ground owners attitude really did annoy me along with the fact that when they used to hold regular monthly registered, when Eric was still with us and before the ground closed for a year or two, a car full of us used to attend every one of them. They used to be good shoots and we enjoyed supporting them.

It is tough in the north to find a decent shoot to go to and in a way i'm glad i got ripped off that day as it forced me to travel southwards to other grounds and over the years you get to know some of these other ground owners and they appreciate the effort you put in to travel the distances involved to shoot their targets.

Perhaps some buisnesses make money easier than others, but loyalty goes both ways.

Absolutely awful day today - when you can't get second shot off because clay has hit ground or dropped in trees there is nothing you can do -- I just hope my last two shoots are not a bad omen for charity shoot - If I shoot rubbish there I am packing it in.

Emmsy,

I think calling out the name of the shooter (Mr X to shoot), the next shooter (Mr Y to follow) and the 3rd shooter (Mr Z to get ready) would certainly help with this problem but there is one thing in addition that for sure should stop these card mix ups.

When you're shooting within a group of 5 mates you hand all 5 cards in to the ref in the order you want to shoot. We then expect the ref to hold onto those 5 cards, still in the same order, and the last man takes all 5 off him/her. Some refs are brilliant at this, some even know to put the 1st man up to the bottom (annoying for some groups who always shoot in the same order). Some manage to hand them back all mixed about. If they appear correct and are just handed into the next stand, the ref isn't shouting out names and you end up with your score on your mates card!!!

Simple solution, as you leave the cage the ref should give you your card, the onus is then on you to check that it is your card and that you agree with the score marked on it (assuming the ref hasn't been clearly calling out losses :o ) The responsibility for collating your cards for the next stand then rests firmly with the individual & the group. The referee has enough to do in my opinion with calling out names, buttoning, watching intently for that chip that might have come off (or was it the wad?????) and marking the card.

Trying to keep up with shooters positions in unofficial squads is obviously a step too far for some.

So shooters, next time a ref tries to thrust your card into your hand when you step out of the cage, just take it and don't try to convince them to hold onto it while your mates shoot.

Job done

Well said Mr P :good: I heard that a refs course was held on the day prior to the Police Shoot too :hmm::hmm:

Shot a very wind affected Sportrap at Rufforth today, they did a good job with the targets and it was a enjoyable shoot, would have been superb without the wind which spoiled a few scores.

Managed to sneak a 90 in to stay in the money, and jnt h/g was two 93s which was great shooting for the conditions :good::good:

Strictly saying the Ref only needs to call the persons name that is about to shoot, it's your responsibility to be aware of when your about to shoot, and to of seen a pair of baird unless you come to the stand and it's empty - thou as Mr Potter has said it really helps keeps things moving if the ref also calls the next one or two shooters, names in advance.

Likewise a Ref should give you a total for the stand as you leave the cage after your final shot, for example, 5 scored.

He should also call any birds lost after each pair, he doesn't have to call the hits, if you hear nothing you can presume that you hit both.

Nor should he indicate that it's the last pair or any other comments until you have finished shooting, for example "nice pair" or "your behind it" etc..

Ref'in properly isn't an easy task ! doing it badly is very easy.

Regarding cards wait till there isn't a person in the stand and let the ref take his time to get the cards into order, that will solve a lot of problems.

Azzurri, correct there are now 10 new ESP refs in the north region, myself included.

Kegworth today for myself, Timps and Chard. Cracking layout with all but one stand (stand 2) in the carpark that wasn't shootable due to the shooting position combined with how the second target was presented (in my opinion).

Finished on a 77 - bit of a mixed bag shooting the testing stuff well and losing a few that I shouldn't have. Timps did a 76 and Chard a sixty something.

Well shot today Auntie, That 41 was High gun so I have some money foy you (Unless I spend it in the pub tonight) : :hmm:

Had a canny turnout today and Richard shot well after traveling up from Huddersfield.

Timps did a 76.

It should have been a little better, I had one clearance the rest were just silly ones and twos dropped, except the car park stand, I don't think I would have faired too well in WW1 trench warfare as I obviously cannot shoot from them .

But overall happy with the way I shot and I did enjoy the day, when we left nick was top and I was second so the scores not too bad for the conditions :good:.

Well shot all!

Went out this morning for a couple of rounds of Skeet before heading back into the garden, I would have been at Dartford for the Grand Eastern but after adding 1" to the LOP and putting a screwdriver through my hand in the process last Sunday wasn't expecting much but had a coaching session in the week which seems to have helped on the problem birds :) .

It was windy as hell and the birds were all over the place, first round shot a 24, second a 23 for 47ex50. Dropped a H3 on the first round that dived the second I pulled the trigger and after switching to maintained lead on Thursday completely cocked my timing up on the pair on 4 and missed both in the second round.

Can't complain, i would have been happy with 38-40 this time last year.

If I am with mates and we shoot a big shoot - ie Police shoot at Hodnet I have a red marker pen and mark all the corners of all cards - that way we can tell approx where we are in bunch of cards in markers hands - and it is obvious to anyone taking a wrong card. - So if anyone else follows this idea use a different colour.

Myself WhiskyMac and his mate Dave hit Shudbrough this morning.

It was my first visit, so I was taking all in on the way down to the club house, the wind was really strong and there looked to be some testing targets, I decided to shoot birds-only, which came back to bite me on the ***.

I got off to a cracking start with only 3 birds away over the first 5 stands, Stand 6 I halfed it then the rest were just the odd one or two dropped, until the final stand which I halfed again  I blame the wind on that one I was struggling to hold the gun still at one point, the fact that WhiskyMac shot 9x10 clearly meant the wind dropped for him ;)

75 for moi

71 WhiskyMac, shame about those 2 stand Scott, some very fine shooting elsewhere thou :good:

68 ? for Dave, I just don't think he got going the poor lad, he shot the right to left low crossers very well thou :good:

That gave WMAC a joint second in C, and if I had gone comp I would pushed him to 3rd, there was an 84 in C :/ leading.

On the subject of ref's, I asked the lad on the rabbit stand, if the rabbit had to be shot before the post ? "errhhmmm Im not sure" he said, ok no problem I said, he then piped up "as long as they haven't stopped rolling you can shoot them wherever you want"

Cracking day, great grub, I must return !

Hi all,

Shugborough for me today - apologies as I was the guilty party posting the 84 in C - should have been a 90, but the wind did effect some stands (stand 12 was terrible when I shot it).

I don't think I'm going to be in C after the CPSA cut :(

Cheers

Back to Caerwys for me and the lad today after not shooting for 3 months ( mum passed away in march )

The lad shot the 12g for the second time today and after the first two stands he was 5 clays in front of me  but lack of concentration got him in the end  god help me in a few years

I shot today with his 20g for the first time , just to enjoy the day and relax but after the halfway mark found out i was only 4 birds behind the leader and 5th overall so got me head down in the second half  finished second in A class in the end :D

Also picked up a silver medal for the winter series :good:

Well shot to all today :good: even better when you enjoy it ;)

Hi Dave,

It must have beeen you in front of me yesterday & I thought I was having a bad day when a C class shooter was doing so well. But good luck to you because you looked like a shooter who had come back in to the sport, so well done.

Went back to the scene of my good fortune last week, Catton Hall. Some targets were quite badly wind affected so on occasion there was some luck in which target you got. Anyhoo, dropped back to an 86 which is much nearer my usual standard than the score of last Monday, as I said to someone in a pm, that 96 was a Champions League performance from a championship player - unlikely to be repeated

If you had asked me a few months ago if I'd have been happy with an 86 I'd have told them I would be ecstatic, for just a few minutes today I was disappointed but that didn't last long.

Sporting Targets is my next shoot, just be warned Southern softies, I plan to shoot closer to last Monday's score than this :good::D:good::D:good:

I shot my first registered Sportrap at Worsley yesterday run and refereed by our very own Nick T, brilliant weather and some nice targets, I enjoyed it so much I am going to go to enter the British Open Sportrap down at Doverage on the strength of it & will be attending the next one at Worsley. :good:

Considering this was my first attempt at Sportrap I was happy how I shot with a 40 ex 50 giving me the overall high score.

I am kicking myself as I did birds only when I saw some AA and A class sporting shooters I know on the squad behind me and knew they were only paying out to high gun.

I guess you have to be in it to win it

Well done to Scott (whiskymac) who had the good sense to enter the comp and walked away with the high gun cash prize with a 37 ex 50.. :good:
