Berelli
I read that in the U.K cats kill 55 milion birds each year. My question is can you be a bird/wildlife fan and still have a cat?

unclestuffy
Do the anti-hunting people in our society not use any form of transport? RTA with birds and mammals accounts for a significant proportion of wildlife deaths. Is there a difference between killing with a gun or a car? DSPUK
I thought this thread was about cats not cars? - I had a pheasant once - was just about to flatten it (doing 60) and it took off right onto wingmirror - neither survived. Anyway if the gamekeeps can poison raptors I am quite sure my cat can eat a bird. Dave
four-wheel-drive
My problem with Cats is if you have a dog you take it out for walks and or let it run in your garden as long as you clean up after them they are no problem. if you had a pet Monkey and let it run free in your neighbours gardens defecating all over the place and causing damage you would have the police after you in a flash. The same would apply if you had a pet snake and it went in to peoples gardens and killed birds and rodents etc again you would have plod after you. But if you people have Cat's and let it run amuck we just have to put up with it most of the cats that people keep as pets are not indigenes to this country so why should they be able to let them run free. wild cats are different and tend to shun people so are not a problem. The motto to this is have a pet cat if you must but keep it in your house or a pen.

Bloke
Got a cat, I keep it in! Darn thing's so lazy that unless the bird walked into its mouth and pulled the jaw down behind itself, it definitely wouldn't chase birds! :yp:

mick miller
I got both, my cat isn't interested in birds in the slightest, I've pushed him outside to try and get the fat pigeons that waddle around the garden but he shows zero interest. However, show him a mouse, rat, mole and he gets motivated. In one instance when a mole hill appeared in the garden he sat there for a 48 hours waiting, when I got up in the morning there was a dead mole on the doorstep. So they ain't all bad. I guess it depends on the cat, if you know it's going to get birds keep it in. If not, let it out. The pooing in gardens argument doesn't wash with me, plenty of dog owners, no doubt many on here, happily let there pet pooches **** all over the place and don't pick it up, my personal hobby horse is owners that let their dogs defecate in parks and play areas. How hard is it to take a couple of placcy bags with you and a bottle of water when you go for walkies? My cat has a litter tray and has been trained to use it, I don't get complaints from the neighbours. Mind you it all depends on the owners, some people are responsible, many don't care a fig. That's life I guess.
inshallah
the difference is i would eat wildlife that someone had shot,I wouldn't want to eat someone elses roadkill Why not? I was brought up on roadkill, and I still pick it up whenever I can. Had several pheasants and a partridge this winter. Often it's in great condition. If it's a bit battered then it just goes in the pressure cooker for stew, rather than a roast. I saw a muntjac by the road recently and I was on my way to visit mum. I nearly picked it up, but I though not even mum would pick up a deer. I told her about it and she said "Oh, you should have picked it up. I bet we could have got some meat off it". Great having a mad old country lady for a mother. I think she's still in WW2 rationing mentality, but I approve.

The Duncan
Do the anti-hunting people in our society not use any form of transport? RTA with birds and mammals accounts for a significant proportion of wildlife deaths. Is there a difference between killing with a gun or a car? It is easier with a gun I find. My Jag struggles on wet grass! Admission time: one evening I potted 6 bunnies, 5 of which I could find, one lost - last kick had sent it into undergrowth. On the way home in the car at low speed, a bunny stepped out in front of car and bosh! One dead rabbit, barely glanced with car, a quick paunch and it was in the bag! Shh! crosshair
I like pussies, but hate cats, my terriers do their job, killing rats, not many cats will kill a full grown rat.
mick miller
True, but my fat tudd of a moggy has brought back a few skinnier ones. He earns his keep. Nowt much beats watching a good terrier at work though.
