How do you legally dispose of a shotgun at the end of its working life

Hi Guys, been informed recently that a shotgun i sent in for repair is beyond salvation, according to the gunsmith the internal mechanisms seem to be from several different guns ( similar to a cut and shut car )hammers, springs firing pins etc and he deems it beyond economic repair to put it right.

So the question is what is the correct procedure for disposal, been searching the forum and other sites but no joy with an answer so far.

You could hand it in to an RFD and he would get it destroyed for you, and give you a receipt. I once took a BSA .22LR rifle in to my local police station (following advice from a RFD) and they took it off my hands and issued a receipt for it.

That was many years ago though, so not too sure if the police would now accept it.

Not sure to be honest.

Might be worth giving your local firearms licencing officer a ring as the Police may be able to arrange destruction for you. This would take care of the necessary documentation too.

I'm pretty sure someone with the right answer will pop along soon.

Most gun smiths will scrap them ( or sell them to the shotgun scrapman, they do exist!!!)

Lost count of the number of times my scrap pile has helped out a client and come to that put a few pounds in my pocket. I am happy to scrap, do the paper work and horde spares.

Example is this.

To make a new main spring/ejector spring(leaf pattern) will cost from £80.00 to £360.00 as a one off. so just sometimes that rusty old gun is worth scrapping and doing 10 mins of paper work for.

I scrap about 15 guns a month and would be very happy to quadruple that number.

Shame you aren't closer. I'd have been round like a shot to scavenge some parts, take a chunk out of the stock to make a knife handle from, and perhaps practised welding, raising dents & multi-choking the barrels... THEN take it to the FEO!

[EDIT] Sage beat me to the punchline!

Have you any silver(ish) escutcheons? If so, how much? PM me with details, ta.

Just out of interest what make/model is it??

It may be worth taking the stock and fore end off (if they're in reasonable nick) and whacking them on Ebay. The rest of the parts (action/barrels) etc can be handed into your local cop shop as suggested. Sign a quick waiver and they'll destroy it for you no charge. Then let your FLO know that its been destroyed/handed in.
