Just rung Humberside police to inquire about a land check and I'm none the wiser. The bloke who answered the phone had a very bad stutter took him a good two min to get half a sentence out. Now I've nowt against people with stutters and all for equal opportunities but its like giving a bloke with no arms a job as a life guard. Rant over. Anyone want to fill me in on the procedure for a land check

or indeed employing a receptionist for your smart London company on the size of her hooters rather than her ability to answer the phone and actually have any common sense at all. Then release her and let her try and book couriers

Land wise just call your firearms team directly or email a request to your FEO if you have his e-mail

We now have a man in our police control room who stutters quite badly. He is what is called a dispatcher - i.e. he sends officers to incidents and is responsible for informing them of any issues or dangers at the scene.

Quite frightening really.

Henry d re read it I don't have anything against people who stutter but IMO its daft having him answering a phone. I'm none the wiser to a land check so again IMO he isn't fulfilling the job he's paid to do. Sure enough he is probably a nice lad but he could do with a different job

I use to have a very bad stammer thank god for old age as it has for the most part gone as I got older but to this day I hate using a telephone and I would never have dreamed of getting a job that included using phone.

It really gets up my nose way people do jobs that they are not suited to do I will probably get slated for saying this but women fire crew (most of them) just do not have the size and strength to do the job properly.

The same goes for ambulance crew ok a woman can do it as good as a man at treating sick people but when it comes to carrying a sick 18stone man / woman down a flight of stairs etc they have to wait for a male crew to come and do it for them.

Forgot to add that they get the same pay but cannot do the complete job of course not being so big can be an advantage at times to get in to confined spaces but having said that you only need one small person for that and they could just as easily be male..

Same for the Police in my opinion mate, In a minute one of these women PC's is going to get hurt badly, I was at a big match before and 2 drunken blokes had an argument and started fighting, there 2 fellas were going at it whilst 5 women police officers tried there best to pull them down and arrest them, they couldnt even seperate the fellas let alone tackle them and cuff em. Was a joke to watch!

Nonetheless at least they had the courage to try. It takes some guts for a woman to step into a situation like that, Fair play to them. Did you think to give them a hand?

Why the hell should he they are paid to do a job if they cannot do it they should net have signed up 5 police against 2 men if it was the other way round 5 men against 2 police women then he should have helped.

No you're right, looking on and laughing at the "joke" of female officers struggling to separate 2 violent drunk blokes is a much more appropriate response. What was I thinking.

I'm not actually fussed if someone with a stutter is willing to work in a role that requires telephone work.

I feel it's rather naïve to assume that his sole job is to answer the phone. Who's to say that the team was out for lunch? I'm pleased that the guy had the courage to pick up the phone and try to help, knowing that his stammer would be noticeable.

What I hate is 'positive discrimination'. Give it a few years and a lot of big companies will be forced to employ female directors. If a woman can't get a job based on her own merits then that should be that.

I have nothing against people with stutters doing a telephony job. I would whole heartedly support it in fact because I have the patience to listen to the person. If they are taking the time to explain something to be then I'll take the time to listen. Not one to preach but there are far too many ********* who are not willing to persevere for only a few moments longer because of their ignorance to somebody else's difficulty. As for equal opportunities, a person with a stutter is no different to a person without one. It may sometimes take them longer to speak, but most of the time it's articulately accurate, unlike someone without a stutter who uses colloquialisms more frequently.

But I bet women in the Police are better at dealing with domestic violence, rape, sexual assault and all the other crimes which possibly need a womans view/touch on the situation.

As for breaking up fighters, she could have just slotted one of them round the head with a batton. That would have stopped them

Most female coppers have a real chip on their shoulders fact, call one a WPC and watch her blood pressure rise

People with disabilities should be able to do whatever job is within their means, without predjudice or ridicule. Both my parents have cerebal palsy yet managed to raise 3 healthy boys into men despite the predujices of society (which thankfully these days is nothing like it was) My father had a good job, retired now and fought most of his working life against bigots who stereotyped him, his engineering degree changed most of that so don't write people off just because of the superficial :good:

In similar vein, one of my customers employs loads of deaf guys on fork lifts.

Crossing the warehouse can be a lottery!

They can't here each other coming, or the screams ;)

One advantage to having a stammer/stutter I found was to have a very large vocabulary if you get stuck and cannot get a word out get around it by using a completely different word.

I found this to be a very useful ploy it also helps when you are listening to people talking and they use words that are not generally used that much I can understand what the person is saying while some others are looking lost.

We had a guy awork with a stutter and one guy always called him Donkey, I asked why and he said I dunno but eeyore eeyore eeyore ways does

Used to work with a totally deaf mechanic, couldn't hear a word as his Ex wife had got custody of his hearing aids, He was a real danger to himself and others: We have to be realistic and employ people in a job that is 100% safe and practical for all concerned and not what the 'Pro' lobbyists demand!
