Bl00dy neighbours at it again!

Recommended Posts

We have had problems with a neighbour on one of my permissions in the past and now they have gone a step further. I went to the farm in question yesterday afternoon with the shotgun to get a couple of rabbits for a bait station. (I have been setting up this bait station for 5 days now and yesterday I wanted to set the clock up with a rabbit. I am going up shortly to collect the clock and find what time the "little madam" is coming out to feed)

Anyway, when I got to the farm I was just in time to go and walk with the farmer to help get his sheep and lambs moved. On the way to where the sheep were I got one shot off and nailed a nice big rabbit for setting up with the clock with so I was happy. While we were walking the farmer told me that he had had yet another phone call from the local bobby. By all accounts this neighbour has now asked the bobby to see if he can get the shooting stopped on this farm. The bobby said that there was nothing he could do about it as our shooting was perfectly legal AND 100% SAFE! The farmer told him that he would not stop me from shooting there anyway, regardless of what anyone said!

It also transpires that this "neighbour" has now had a CCTV camera installed with a security light to see who is driving up to the farm which uses the same lane as to their house. Nothing can be done about this as it is a shared lane! With this in mind the farmer has suggested that every time I drive past I open my window and wave to the camera - That suits me fine but he said I really ought not to wave with just two finfers!:lol::lol:

I should add that this is the same neighbour that has already been warned about wasting police time by reporting false allegations and that I have met up with and spoken to the local beat bobby showing him over the land and he does not have a problem with me shooting there! (I make a point of not shooting in the field nearest the neighbours house as I do not want to be sen as the antagonist!)

Just to make the afternoon a little more interesting we spotted one of the farmers cows had starting to calve so we moved it into the shed, put her on a calcium drip and helped her and her calf on it's way - I'm happy to report that Mother and Baby are now both doing fine so that was the end of my afternoons shooting - Just one shot for one bunny in nearly two hours, but that is what it is all about - Helping out wherever you can to retain very good relationships with your farmers! I should add that the farmer and his family are always quick to show their gratitude with "light refershments" and a happy chat every time I go there!

yep thats the best thing, ignore them and try and be subtle with your shooting. Though you shouldn't need to be it is easier. That said if they intend to keep being a pain in the backside and with the farmer on side I would occasionally have a shot with the .243 outside their garden at 4am occasionally just to keep them on their toes

At this rate it looks likes the neighbours actions will become harassment at some point, worth keeping this in mind as a nothing will put the frighteners up the neighbour like plod coming around to discuss a potentional harassment charge against him...

I would try not to worry too much about the idiot next door, they sound like the kind of people who thrive on drama and complaining!

I'd wager if it wasn't you shooting they would be complaining about the farmers stock being noisy / muck spreading / silage cutting etc etc!!

And from memory landowners and tenant farmers alike are legally bound to control pests anyways.

Best thing the farmer can do is put his **** heap next to their garden and blather the shared drive in mud :-))

I feel so lucky that I've never had to deal with angry neighbours on my permissions. I really don't know what I'd do to be honest. I guess just ignoring them is the best bet. No point in winding them up.

Next time you see them perhaps offer them some fresh Rabbit or venison and try to be friendly? That is of course unless they're crazy vegan sorts which can't be reasoned with?

Might be worth getting back in touch with the local bobby again, and asking him how he intends on resolving the situation with wasting police time?, Some forces issues Harressment notice warning's, as this is now harrassment against you and the farmer I would say. There is potential here for them to start going beyond just calling the police, which might put you in a awkward situation.

Good luck, and dont stop shooting, seems the Police and farmer are on your side.

Unfortunately it's a fact of life - there are just too many people not minding their own business and meddling in others lives - sorry to say but it looks like this situation isn't going to end well / soon (If they have already been cautioned wasting police time, bought & set up a cctv system & spot light they are set to be a right royal pain).

I guess next steps from them are letters to the paper / spreading malicious rumours / radio phone in rants etc.

I note you are a member of SACS - can they offer any advice or help (apologies if you have already done this), are you keeping a log / game diary of time, date & quary, it may help you later if accusations are raised.

I personally would definitley keep shooting the area but offer some of the rabbits to animal rescues etc for pet food.

Hope I don't get a similar situation on my permissions so wish you all the luck mate.

What winds them up the most is that they feed the foxes which then occasionally come across the land that I shoot! My unmoderated .243 does make quite a noise - and a mess of foxes - Much to their horror!:blush::rolleyes:

And NO at the farmers request/instructions I will not stop nor will I be stopped shooting there as long as I make sure that every shot I take is a "safe shot"! I have had the local bobby out on the permission and shown him over the land and he agrees with the farmer that there is no reason why I should not continue shooting there!

Oops, I got that "edit" wrong, didn't I!
