mick miller
Okay, you can tell us. What things have you got in your cabinet that you shouldn't have?

ME
Happened to me after I got a variation. FEO turned up unannounced on a Saturday (when I was out). Asked the missus if he could look at the new safe. Even asked the missus for the keys so he could look in the new cabinet. Obviously missus ME doesnt know where the keys are, but a good try... apache
They have no legal right to attend your house and see what's in your cabinet. You don't have to let them in to your house, never-mind show them your cabinet. BUT if my FEO showed up at the door I would show him what he wanted to see. I have nothing to hide and the more co-operative I am with them, the better they will treat us. The only person with anything to fear is someone with something to hide! HDAV
Unless he turns up with a proper copper...... I don't have an issue with them doing spot checks, unless they thought they had a reason to check truly random checks would be a waste of man power! Never realised that.
al4x
Are the FEO's separate from the police over there? Never realised that. Ours are employed by the police but are civilians, as said they have no powers of entry so you could say no. Mine has a couple of times phoned the night before to organise visits for things like renewals and variations. No idea if its trying to catch me on the back foot but no one I know had had one turn up un announced. Round here they don't even visit for routine stuff any more, house moves renewals and variations are mostly done over the phone.

Always wondered about that, so do they have to wear a uniform or anything? I wouldn't like John doe turning up with a T-shirt and jeans lookin to see my cabinet

Tiger955i
I have had two variations on my FAC and no spot checks, only the usual interview. As Apache said. If he turned up at my door I would show him the cabinets etc with no worries. In fact our FEO is a really decent bloke so would probably offer him a coffee as well
HDAV
Are the FEO's separate from the police over there? Never realised that. Mine was a retired copper, drove a little 206 Van and plain clothes, really nice guy, would have chatted to him for ages, but he had other visits to do. While he was with me he did have an "interesting" phone call from another applicant. I think on the mainland they are mostly if not all civie staff. I would want to see identification if it was another FEO who "dropped by without an appointment".
Rushjob
Same here. Mine's just left having okayed a shiny new FAC ticket for .17, 22LR, .22-250 and .243 for me so he'd probably qualify for a bacon butty too!
mossy835
think they have to phone first, but not had it done to me.
libs
I have heard the story mentioned by ME a few times. Tricky blighters, asking about the location of the keys etc... If mine turned up of course I would let him in, all is ship shape I can't see any harm in building a relationship with a man who decides what toys you get to buy! Vermincinerator
I know my FEO very well but he will only be allowed into my home if he has made a previous appointment, and before anyone goes on about if you have nothing to hide etc..........i have nothing to hide. Even then he would have to have a good reason, if its just for a spot check then AFAIAC thats not a good enough reason. Ian.

Careful with this approach, if he were to turn up to examine your security & you refuse access you can fall into the category of failing to comply with the need to co-operate with the licensing authority. There is already a stated case where the FEO was a cop who was refused access, and the police decision to revoke him was upheld in that the holder was no longer a fit person to hold a certificate. Were to you stand your ground, I feel that it is likely that the modern use of civilian staff would be held to fall broadly within the earlier case and the police would revoke you and defend ( IMHO successfully ) it at Court. Just my 2p worth.
inthedark
No, they cant do it. Ok, maybe I should have said - they dont have the power to do it.
oisin og
"I think on the mainland they are mostly if not all civie staff. Vermincinerator
"Failing to comply with the need to co-operate with a licensing authority" Never heard that one before, is this on the statute books or have you made it up? I cant possibly see how refusing entry to a civilian employee onto my property can make me an unfit person to hold a Firearms licence It is my right to refuse entry to my home to anyone who does not have official authority unless it is by warrant or court order. etc.... Ian.
