Avon & Somerset - FLO redundancies

Rumour has it that Avon & Somerset are making their FLO's redundant in April 2012? and their duites are to be managed by Uniformed ARV's?

not sure how much truth is in this rumour, it does not affect me directly but has anyone heard anything on the subject?

Seems a leap back in time if they do?

That would be a crying shame

One of their FLO's went to incredible lengths to help my brother overcome problems related to identity theft and impersonation to help him get his SGC. Won't go into the full details but the chap really put himself out. An absolute gent in every way and it would be a crime to make people like him redundant! Realise some FLO's get bad press but they haven't got the easiest of jobs and if you ask me there are some genuinely good ones that deserve some credit and our support!

Really BAD idea if true. Yes it's awful that the FEOs will get got, but think of the security viewpoint - ARV turns up outside your house - far more obvious that something's up than a knackered old plain car with a (generally!) middle aged chap at the helm...

Couldn't agree more. An ARV pulling up outside is the last thing I'd want!

Hopefully someone is pulling your string.......can't see that happening

I would imagine the chap would turn up in plain clothes and in an unmarked car because im hoping they would appreciate that a uniformed officer would draw unwanted attention.

Not necessarily. Before FEO's were invented the local Bobby came out on his bike to deliver your license and check security, leaving his bike at your garden gate for all and sundry to see !!!

Staffordshire made 8 FEO s redundant about 10 months ago

The arv have been out to me twice for a renewal and an address change . The lads turned up in all the gear but the cars here are unmarked .

They still have some FEO but they can't keep up with the paperwork my renewal for SGC took 5 1/2 months. My ticket was 3 1/2 months out of date

The arv lads said they cancel around 50% of their appointments every day because of jobs cropping up

Things can only get worse

I doubt it; an ARV officer who doesn't wear uniform with the purpose of visiting hapless gun owners is ... An FEO. Surely?

I imagine some beancounter somewhere thinks that ARV folk know firearms (not necessarily true) and that FEO work takes little time (also untrue AFAIK). This project is doomed.

This sounds ridiculous.

ARV officers are for spontanious firearms incidents, not checking security and if someone is suitable to own a firearm.

This will not work.

Doesn't mean they can't be trained, after all most FLO's are Civvies.

However you have to feel for the FLO's who will lose their job as they are no doubt experienced in what they do.

subsequently the new system would lose that personal touch that most FAC holders have with their current FLO's

Whether it works or not it's already here under the guise of saving money .

Instead of managing properly the departments they have .

My Feo is an ex chief inspector who used to be head of firearms and dogs . It's all jobs for the boys .

Got as far up the ranks as possible . Retire on final salary pension then come back as civilian employee.

Surprise he managed to survive the redundancies . As there are now only 2 in the county that do the paper sift and the arv do the frontline checks

You never know it could work for the best. A lot of firearms police do have an interest in guns and are less scared of them than most. I took an so19 officer clay shooting a while back he loved it. Though the are you allowed that when the auto came out was a little worrying. What it might do is get the people who deal at the sharp end of call outs to meet a lot of the local shooters and help to reduce instances of them over reacting to people in cammo in fields
