silverhawk
Does anyone inform the local police when lamping? I have had them them turn up twice so far.Not because of a report but as they see the lamp from the distance. The officer said they could do some kind of file so i could call in anytime and let them know when i go down.

bedwards1966
Some may do, though it may take so long to actually get through to someone, then hope that it gets recorded and looked at when needed that it is probably not worth it most of the time. It's nice to see the police bothering about it though, it makes a nice change...!

swiss.tony
waste of time fella bin stoped well over 30 times in last 5 years from ARV"s to local plod if they get a call from joe bloggs about gun shots they have to turn up regardless the only thing good ringing up is you get a crime number so easy er to get rid of them. I have bin told its law that you need to ring yer yer yer cause it is iv bin told its illegal to lamp from road plus a few other things top and bottom is im out 3 days aweek most weeks and the cops have a job to do so just let them get on with there checks when we get stoped simples . Plus its good when helicopter turns up best day was 4 volvo t5s, evo 10, and dog van but they were impressed with the guns in back of 4x4and the pile of bunnys plus they want to everything when you ring times ,people, guns, car reg, location, wat your shooting phone numbers plus more im not messing about like that 3 times aweek i"ll take the getting stoped bit every time atb swiss

I have had them them turn up twice so far.Not because of a report but as they see the lamp from the distance. The officer said they could do some kind of file so i could call in anytime and let them know when i go down. I don’t call them as they have enough to get on with. Around here, there have been 3 farm fork lifts, a working cocker spaniel, 1000 lts of heating oil and food taken out of freezers in garden sheds. So I guess coming out to see me mob handed might get them out of the station….and bump into the toe-rags that work at night! TEH

sako751sg
no because I am engaged in a lawful activity. Absolutely. If i go away for a drive i dont inform the plod.Twice i have been lamping on foot and they have been at the car waiting when i have returned and they have been spot on.Both times they asked what i was shooting and after telling them they have been happy even without seeing FAC so they must already have had all details from car reg.Other times i have been passed by them whilst lamping from the road and they carried on. Beardo
It all depends on the location, as we're in such heavily populated areas round here I do tend to log in when lamping. This saves the huge waste of taxpayers money that sending a helicopter and ARV costs. I just get a call from the police confirming it's me at the location and job done. I make the decision on a job by job, site by site basis. Never going to do any harm calling, and remember they can hold the details for 3 months, so if you are going to a site several times in that time make sure they know, only the one call required then! pegasus bridge
i do when lamping just to save any time if they get a call. but it can be a pain, i have to call notts, and leics police for some of the land i shoot over. the questions they ask when you call can vary wildly - some are quick basic details calls - others ask for everything - they really could do with getting a standard form sorted. i also text the land owner and a househlder on the farm because they have been the subject of a few thefts and will come out and investigate themselves if they see headlights on the land - it works well - they (landowner /householder) even contact me if someone strange is on the land, mostly dog walkers at night shining lamps around public footpaths though
Beardo
my favourite question which always makes me laugh if it gets asked is "do you have permission to shoot there" - i think this is to catch out and would-be armed trespassers! humperdingle
I don't tell the coppers, but do text the farmer to let him know i'll be lamping. Keeps him in the know, and if the cops phone him or turn up at the farmhouse, he can tell them to ...ahem....'go away'.

Salop Matt
Touch wood ive never been stopped or had the police out. And i definately wont be calling them as they have a duty to turn out when called anyway weather yove called or not ! As long as your going about completly leagally you have nothing to worry about and shouldnt be made to fell like a criminal. A mate of mine used to call the police but stopped when one day someone reported seing a guy with a rifle in cammo gear on the edge of a wood. ironically they couldnt find him and he realised that the cars with all the blue lights must be out because of him so he downed tools took off his cammo and walked down to flag plod down on there next lap around and explained exactly who he was and proved all his licences and permition slips and gave them the crime reference number he was given by the controll room when he had called them 2 hours before and pointed out that had his mobile number and asked why they didnt simply call him when they got the report to clarify his location etc. The PC`s told him phoning in was a waste of his time and theres. ! silverhawk
I think the problem is the land has been poached on twice and they leave everything they shoot on the ground .And alot of copper theft in the area. Also sitting in the car at 2am with the interiour light on i supose makes the police more suspisious. I think what they didnt like is having to walk 300 yards to get to my car to find out its a false alarm .Think i might start calling them from next week see if it makes a difference . Its funny as i was asked several times what am I shooting I replied rabbits.Until i realsied he refered to the type of gun I said 17 hmr he looked very confused .He even tried to look into the boot but my firearms are always cased away when at the car

Redgum
When I first started lamping I informed the police but they didnt really care to much, just usual questions on permission. I use my van mostly which is sign written so they know its me now from years of parked up in strange places. (though the sign writing plays havoc with the fly tipping )

Davy Holt
Hiya, depends on where and what I'm shooting.... 90% of the time I don't phone and have only had one visit from them over the last few years. However last night we were ratting with the air rifles in a farm next to a very busy main road so thought it best to let them know just in case as the farm itself is not lived on but all the machinery is stored there and we were parked up in a van
Beardo
Picked up a new bit of land this weekend and the farmer specifically asked us to call it in to the police as there's an anti woman who adjoins the property who always calls the police when she hears people shooting. On signing in, i now hear there's a new number for the whole country - just dial 101 and it connects to your local constab non emergency number. I'd not come across that before. Alanl50
Me and one of my farmers where lamping last night local area, been loads of times, farmer normally tells his neighbours, not bad going we got 15 rabbits, 1 hare, + 1 ARV, and the Suffolk force helecopter. they pulled alongside the meadow on the road, blue lights on then turned them off (the police car) we drove across too them, really decent guys they said they been reported gunshots and had to investigate, one was a shooter himself, asked all the normal questions, who owned the land, who was shooting, had I got my licence on me, no I said but have a copy in my car back at the farm, they mentioned copies are not legal I said I didnt want to lose or mess up the real one no probs was the reply, took all our details, then said they would meet us back at the farm to check my licence, me and the farmer drove back to the farm and the police arrived a few minutes later, they had to turn around about 1/4 mile further down the lane before coming back, the copy of my licence checked, then the serial number on my shotgun, all illuminated by the force helecopter, one of the policemen said he had messaged them to stand down but they still turned up. One of the officers then suggested we phone in using the 101 number to advise suffolk HQ of any future lamping to save the grief, but he never said we had too, we both gave our mobile numbers so we can be contacted just in case, as Im very often lamping on my own over 4 farms. They were really nice guys and a credit to Suffolk police. Alan The farmer is still wondering who phoned in, he has an idea!!!!
